Well no shock PFF is out of Ohio and to them Myles Garrett is seconding coming of his Lord Savior... with their scoring every week.

They are making a play to get Myles DOPY award.

But the Panel of 50 vote on it so it comes down to writers who are on the Panel I believe.

Stats are hard to ignore... but you never know...

I dislike PFF because I believe they often use statistics to tell a skewed story.

Each year, PFF looks at different stats to take away from Watt. At the end of the day, only Reggie White reached 100 sacks faster in his career. To me, you can’t explain away a career with such impressive numbers.

They should count non holding calls against DE’s as a statistic. I’m sure TJ would lead that category by a ton as well. It’s somewhat of a crime how much he and Highsmith get mugged every game.

TJ was just named AFC defensive player of the week. It would be a terrible injustice if he doesn't win the DPOY award.

I don't think they hate Watt. Nor do they actually believe their own ratings and lists. PFF, like most media, purposely say crazy things just to get clicks. Truth doesn't matter to PFF any more than it does to any other media outlet. They say whatever gets them more clicks.

I've told this story before, but about 4 years ago....I watched PFF rate two Qbs that played against each other......Qb1 had a 2 tds, and a rushing td more yards, and won the game and the other...Qb2 had no tds, and 2 ints, less yards, and lost the game. They ranked Qb2 way higher. Right then I was like.....yeah ....No.

PFF isn't even purely analytical, they also use opinion based analysis to help form their scores. It's more gimmicky than anything, as the NFL uses it to appease the gambling and fantasy crowd it prioritizes above all else in this day in age.

For QB's they use ratings like the velocity of the football and how tight a spiral is even if the ball is thrown to the other team. Jeff George would be a first ballot Hall of Famer if it was up to PFF.

It is funny, someone is making up all kinds of new stats that actually don't mean anything.

They were talking about win rate, and I was thinking it had something to do with sacks and pressures, but I guess it doesn't have anything to do with them.

It is some kind of new math where you don't actually keep score of things you can actually count. It is like scoring ribbon dancing in the Olympics, there is no actual thing to count, so you just have to hope the judge favors your country.

I think there are 4/5 really elite edge rushers in the league, Watt obviously, Garrett, Bosa, Parsons, Crosby, maybe Allen.

TJ is the most consistently productive but there may be a certain amount of voter fatigue setting in, the talking heads want these awards spread out and may feel it is somebody else’s time as Watt has already won it. The same happened with Aaron Donald to some extent, I know he won it several times but there was a stretch of several years where he was just on a different level to everyone else.

Listening to some of the current analysis they all pay lip service to TJ’s excellent year but then move on to say that the advanced metrics push Garrett and Parsons above him. I’ve never heard that before and the award has always generally gone to the most productive player, impact plays are called impact plays for a reason and TJ has been the most impactful defensive player this season.

I remember reading an excellent tweet about this recently but can’t find it now. The underlying statistic the talking heads are clinging to is ‘pass rush win rate’ and this is always going to work against TJ by design. Every snap where an edge rusher lines up is counted as either a win/loss with no in between, so when TJ drops in to coverage that is counted as a loss even though he wasn’t rushing the passer on that play. The other guys in contention almost never drop in to coverage. Adding a third category win/loss/NA would solve the anomaly but it’s really only relevant to one player at the top end so don’t hold your breath.

The same with double teams, it’s always used as a stick to beat TJ, with with a suggestion that opposing offences aren’t worried about him, but what most people don’t know is that TE and RB chips aren’t counted so an outside rusher like TJ will never have a high double team rate with the current measurement system.

It’s not just PFF either, the Athletic and others are all on this bandwagon, probably because they are all reading the same stats and subconsciously they are talking themselves in to a new DPOY, it’s boring giving it to a previous winner.

I agree with whoever said above that the NFL media thrives on clicks and this type controversy, they love to whip fans up in to a frenzied debate. It’s good for business, clicks get them sales and pays their salaries

The voting panel of 50 will all come with different views and a lot of this chatter may not matter to them, but it does seem like the award is going away from TJ. Honestly I doubt he wins it.

Well I blame some of this in fans for buying into PFF, and other places like themselves bull$hit. If so many people didn't act like what these people said as if it were the gospel....nobody would care what they think, and anyone on this board knows since I've been on this board what I think.......
