For some reason, the punting game in the NFL hasn't grown the same way the kicking game has the past 25 years. I remember 50 yard FG's being a rare accomplishment, and not many kickers having the leg to get to 55. Now guys are making 60 yarders with relative ease and a 50 yard FG is seen as one that should be made 80% of the time or more. For some reason the punting game hasn't grown, and the guys that have big legs tend to suck at directional kicking and vice versa. There aren't a ton of great NFL punters, there are quite a few really good kickers.

IDK the exact era, but 'soccer' style FG kickers were rare pre 70's, and even then, while generally more accurate than straight kickers, the lengths were not that far off for good kickers. The last straight booter may have been Mark Moseby and he lasted a long time. As soccer became more prominent in the last decades the kicking became
generally better on all levels, more competition, better coaching, etc. Punting is a different action and while every team has a punter from Jr high up, not every guy longs to practice hours for the chance to get in a game for a few plays. Simplistic thinking, but my take anyway, lol.

I can't believe in a nation of 350 million people and a World with 8 billion you can't find 32 people who are great at kicking a football. You know there has to be a ton of Soccer players who could boot the hell out of a football. I say we steal one from them;)

or ripped the seat out holding for a FG. Pressly you can only let it out so far and repair it so many times. Out budget only allows a couple of uni's for a punter, lol.

Maybe you're right, certainly one way to look at it.

I think the way punting has progressed in the college game has had something to do with it too. There are a lot of the "aussie" style punters that do the running start to allow their coverage unit to get downfield before the ball is kicked. This isn't something that works in the NFL game, and it leaves a smaller crop of "NFL-style" punters available to the next level than ever before.

actually Wing is from Australia, wasn't he originally a rugby guy? I think the motion for punting would fit Rugby style more that soccer.

It’s Supulveda and he was completely overrated cause of a college tackle he made. Definitely not worth a fourth round pick. If we’re bringing back a punter that to me tells me our punter is garbage. Just get rid of him and start Wing on Sunday.

Didn't think Rugby but can see it. I'm just thinking how strong their legs are. They look like tree trunks.

About time. He should be starting. I don't care how rusty he might be. He can't do any worse.

Wing is good, but Waitman was the best damn punter we've had in the past 5 years. That dude could crush a football. Where the hell is Waitman?

signed a reserve future contract with the bears. I dont get it, with all the junk punters in the league, this guy cant keep a job. So either he is incredibly good for a time, then inconsistent, or whatever something else might be.

About 3 weeks ago all civil charges against Araiza were dropped and there never were any criminal charges against him because the investigation showed that Araiza left the party before the girl claimed the assault happened. He is now free and clear so I think in the off season he will get some offers. He is the best punting prospect since Ray Guy.

Can we deactivate Mitch, keep Harvin for holding duties if we are in fear of introducing a new guy at this stage and use the practice squad guy for new punting. Not sure of all the rules around that with Mitch. Ooops he fell and hurt himself and he is on IR now. Call Coach B he has all of the loopholes down!!

If I remember correctly, I saw him punt in preseason with the Raiders and in the regular season with the Broncos. I thought he was pretty decent? Not sure they passed on him.

Harvin is such a headscratching player.

Every now and then, he'll have a few series where he'll look like an elite, or at least a kicker of pedigree...and then shank a punt or two, sometimes in the very same game. Then he'll have a stretch where he looks competent, only to go through a period where he looks like one of the worst punters in the league in years.

I just don't understand how he can be so erratic. Given how many years he's played now, if he hasn't been able to stabilize his play yet, he probably never will. I just hope the good to great version of Harvin shows up on Sunday. Or better yet, give the ball to Wing.

not sure it works that way, the 3rd QB is not counted against the 45 active. So its not like you can activate someone to replace him, the 3rd QB cannot come in unless the other 2 are knocker out of the game permanently.

Winning the field position battle is huge in the postseason. We can’t allow Shankopuntimus to cost us a playoff game!
