How in the world can TJ not be the clear front runner for DPOY. It sounds as though Myles Garrett is the favorite but I don't get it. TJ leads in nearly all categories and is ahead of Garrett and Parsons, not to mention the first player in NFL history to lead in sacks for three seasons. If he does not win, the AP and the ranking system they use are a total joke.

With the Steelers making the playoffs and TJ winning the sack title again, I think he wins it.

Oddly I think him getting injured ups his chances. But last I checked on.my betting app Myles Garrett had something ridiculous like -3000 odds of winning, so it seems it's a foregone conclusion.

    Watt 19 sacks
Garrett 14 sacks and he's not even top 5 in the league

Garrett gets a lot of love from the PFF community for being the best EDGE player in the league. Statistically he isn't, as he makes less impact plays than some of his other counterparts at the EDGE position. He is still a very high end EDGE guy, but pretty solidly not in the top 3 (N. Bosa, Watt, Parsons).

He got some traction because he was on a really good pace through the second game vs. us and actually forced the turnovers/big plays he hadn't in previous years... but he has completely vanished since then. He has only had 1 sack in the final 7 weeks (6 games played), and probably fell behind. He may still get votes (and win, who knows), but with TJ making history and doing so with 19 sacks vs. Garrett's 14, 8 combined turnover stats (FF,FR,INT) to Garrett's 5, and his higher tackle, solo tackle, and TFL stats... its really going to be hard to justify giving it to Garrett outside of just wanting to give it to him since this has been the closest he has ever come to winning and TJ already has one. No other reason to decide to take Garrett over Watt otherwise.

PFF have been on a mission to get Garrett this award for years. They openly mock Steelers fans and run TJ down on their podcast. Look at this tweet from one of their leading analysts, they are not even trying to hide their contempt for TJ Watt and the Steelers

Unfortunately PFF have a lot of influence at this stage and their grades and analysis is becoming mainstream despite very obvious flaws in how their grades are calculated

That's not how betting works though. If too many people bet on one person, the odds will change to try to even out the bets so Vegas doesn't lose no matter who wins

Very true. It just seems like a guy that is just trying to get his favorite player an award.

Fans are always into stats/analytics, so its just another stat/analytic for them to track. Makes sense even if the numbers are inherently flawed. It also makes sense that analytics guys buy into the analytics being more right than the stats. This is how players can get drastically out-performed statistically (like Garrett has by Watt and others) and yet still be perceived ahead/better than those players. They gotta stick by their analytical metrics even if the eye test and statistics don't align. If they don't, why would anyone else.

Don't be surprised if Garrett wins it. The media has been fawning over him.

TJ Watt is the best defensive player in the NFL hand down...

I can't remember if it was Patrick or Cowherd who mentioned this on their show today, 65% of the games he starts we win, only 19% of the games he is not in we win, I do not have the % on others, but that alone should put him over the top (along with leading in every stat), that indeed is MVP stuff. ( yes I'm talking homer now, lol)

Myles Garrett should have been arrested on the field for assault but the powers that be think that he should win DPOY for slightly above average stats over the true DPOY. The world truly is upside down.

It's always the age old question for these types of awards. Is it the guy who is the best player on the best team? Is it the guy that the team misses the most when they're gone? Is it the guy that is best statistically?

Right now Garrett is the betting favorite (for whatever that is worth) with Parsons second highest and TJ third. That was as of 1/2 though, and maybe the last week changes some of that? It really depends on what the people that vote think and I couldn't even begin to speculate there.

Optics may likely prevail but TJ deserves it on merit and stats alone. Regardless and more importantly, he will be sorely missed starting this Sunday.

I do not see enough of other teams to see how the other players are matched and so forth, TJ is mauled a LOT, but that will never sway many if any voters. Parsons is a spectacular player and if he got the nod, as much as I hate them 'boys i could respect it. Garret is not a slouch, but just based on his last 6 games in THIS year. everything should come into consideration. I think sometimes it comes down to the popularity of the moment and all that comes with that. The Browns were media darlings a couple of years ago and as usual stunk up the joint. There were years he might have been deserving, this is one year when I do not think he is, but I don't vote, so what to I know.

Yeah, Garrett is a very good player. It is a bit nit picky when you look at it all, but these things are so close you have to analyze everything. To me its hard to call a guy the best defensive player in football if he can go a full 5 game stretch and get completely shut out. He had a great first 10 games, so does that outweigh the collapse at the end of the year for him? Hard to tell.

I will say one thing about TJ... He NEVER disappears. Ever. In the past 5 years TJ has never had back to back games where he records neither a sack or a turnover. None. Myles Garrett has a 5 game stretch, two separate 3 game stretches, and one 2 game stretch in that same time frame. He just disappears for certain times throughout the season. Very talented player, I just don't get the hype when he is compared to guys like Parsons and TJ (who IMO stand a head above the rest of the league at the EDGE position). Nick Bosa is very good. Garrett is too. You gotta include Danielle Hunter in that high end mix as well. Josh Allen looks to be a guy that might turn the corner and be a dude up there too. Hendrickson is a really high end guy at the position as well. Lots of really nice players, but to me Parsons and TJ are the best.

That is an amazing stat that TJ has never had back to back games without a sack or turnover over the last 5 years. Incredible!
