Then they could try and sign him to a longterm deal he finally came into his own this season and he led the league in passes defended. If the Steelers keep Lewis they are in good shape at cornerback with Ike Taylor who was playing good before he got injured, and Cortez Allen who showed promise. Lewis said he wants starter money not sure if the team can afford him though.

No. They can't afford a franchise tag...even once Omar does his thing and gets under the cap...i think the tag is like $10 mil...same reason they won't tag Wallace.

They won't tag him but I think they'll come to terms on a deal.

    IMO

i hope so. he's actually one of the only players i'm hoping they re-sign. everyone else (except for maybe Polamalu) could be let go if the asking price is too high (especially Wallace).

The Steelers in general DO NOT FRANCHISE players, they let the player
explore oppurtunities around the league, then if the player wants to negotiate
in what the Steelers think that players worth is then they will either sign him
or let him go. Faneca/Joey Porter, Randle El come to mind. Players will always
TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN. ALWAYS!

Troy's not a free agent, no need to sign him. They may ask him to take a pay cut though.

Everything I've read sounds positive on Lewis. From his own mouth he said that the exit interview with the Steelers was very positive.

I think the Steelers franchised Woodley then signed him to a longterm deal.

    Was transition tagged I believe.

Ward is correct, we "rarely" us the tags we are allowed. One reason is money, secondly is the FO don't want that reputation among the players as a team restricting their movement. They want players here who "Want" to be here and not forced. They will use it to protect themselves if that position has no-one in the pipeline able to step up and a lose of said player would be catastrophic to the teams success.

They want Lewis and Lewis wants to be here. They both agree a pay raise has been earned and is due. Now its time to have a "meeting of the minds".
