Perhaps this and the DeShaun Watson debacle will allow NFL Owners to finally come to the realization that throwing large amounts of money at old vets who are way past their prime isn't going to beget a Super Bowl; no matter how stacked your team is. Brady clearly deserves his own category and Stafford has a pretty damn good OC in Sean McVay. Beyond those exceptions?!... too many rules state otherwise.

This all said, teams are gonna continually try this method anyways... so expect more stories like this to be commonplace in the future.

Deshaun Watson wasn't old or past his prime lol.
He was a lot of things, but old and past his prime aren't any of them.
Him and Russell Wilson are not the same situation.

Farve left Green Bay and did fine.
    Brady obviously
    Stafford

There's plenty of great QB's who have gone to a new team and did great. I don't think Russell Wilson and Watson failing will change anything.

Peyton Manning was great for a few years in Denver too

I don't think anyone spends that big percentage of their cap to not win SBs. Brady, and Stafford are the only ones. Manning had nothing to do with their SB win.....besides being their, and people say Ben's 1st SB win was bad....at least He scored a td....Peyton didn't even do that.

Watson clearly isn't who he was as it stands. It also is becoming more apparent that he never will reach the same performance he did as he was in his earlier years with the Texans. Part of this was due to the amount of time off he spent during 2021 to 2022 (all of which was his doing). The other case working against Watson is the amount of punishment he has, and currently is, adding up to his body.

For that matter, Wilson and Watson rely heavily on the same aspect; athleticism over technique. Yes, their playmaking capabilities were exceptional during the peaks of their power. Now?! Not so much anymore. Both are now finding it more and more difficult to compete at a high level without their go to "fastball", their athletic traits.

As for Farve?! Completely different case their as a whole. Farves gifts were never his legs like Wilson or Watson but his Arm Talent. Even then though, Farve isn't considered a success for Minnesota as they never reached the Super Bowl. His one year stand with the Jets is also laughable now given the information.

In short?! Selling the farm for a QB way past his prime is simply inadvisable. You listed Stafford and Brady; both of whom I had already listed not only as extreme exceptions but why they were. Again though, Owners will continue to shell out Money for these types of QBs hoping and praying they can recapture some of their greatest moments; aspects that sadly will happen too few and too far between.

Favre was very close in 2009 with the vikings. The Vikings would never have had this opportunity without Favre

True but the Broncos were a contender in every other year with Peyton too...like Favre with the Vikings, it would never have happened for the Broncos without Peyton, like winning at least 12 games in each of his seasons and being in another super bowl.If the Super Bowl win is the only thing that makes you happy, too bad for you

It's still not a failure like it was for Wilson in Denver...It's like saying that Kurt Warner in Arizona was a failure because he didn't win the super bowl....A QB can't do everything, but when he gives his team an opportunity to contend, it's a big plus from the start and as I said the vikings without Favre or the broncos without Manning (2012 and 2013) would never have had the chance to contend without them...I could even say that a lot of free agents that the broncos have signed were because of Manning and that helped the Broncos in 2015

Wilson was a failure and the broncos regret it big time....Not the case for Favre with the vikings

Sorry but no it's not, but if a team mortgage away a good bit of the future for a Qb to take them to the SB, and they don't win one....then that is a big waste, and failure. I would bet they would even tell You that. Just like the Jets....they didn't bring A.Rod in to win a measly playoff game.....when You put that many resource into one guy....it's to win the SB, and nothing less is worth it, or the teams future

But in the case of Favre(vikings) and Manning, they did not mortgage their future....They were both free agent so they don't give up draft pick to have them....I agree that if you go all-in like crazy on a player, you need to win big time

I thought Favre to the Vikings was for picks to the Jets.

No...He was release by the jets after they draft Mark Sanchez in 2009 and Favre had signed in august with the vikings

This whole move has been an unmitigated disaster for Denver, they are going to have to eat over $80m in dead cap over the next two seasons to get rid of his contract, never mind the opportunity cost they have passed up with all the picks they gave up to get him.

I am sure Sean Payton has a plan going forward but he is going to be working with two hands tired behind his back for the foreseeable future while they try to work through this mess.

So an NFC Championship Game is the benchmark for being one of the highest paid QBs at signing?!

I don't know but if they had to do it again, the vikings would do this move every time...I mean, the vikings would have had no chance of being a true contender with Tavaris Jackson and with Favre, they had a huge opportunity but they were short of the ultimate goal but they have no regrets about that.Only one team can win a super bowl but be in the conference title game and be very close to win against the future super bowl champion is not a disaster for me!

i was watching Ryan Clark comment on this situation...He all but called sean payton a racist. The way that they have handled this situation, while trying to make the playoffs, is really bad. it looks bad, sounds bad, and will most likely cost the Broncos chances to get high end free agents. i mean, who wants to go there, sign a nice contract, then be told to change the contract or we will bench you. if the steelers pulled this, it would be tough to support the team. just bad business, to me

Thing is Sean P....can't do any of this without the Owners, and GMs backing it every bit of the way.
