The downside of making him inactive v. dressing and then just riding the pine is that, if inactive, he can just bail on the game (like JH92 is reported to have done). Lessens the sting of not being on the field a bit when you can't see or hear it.

I don't think Rooney needs to issue a command to Tomlin that Pickens be benched. Simple enough to just offer his opinion, or let Tomlin know he'd be okay with that decision if Tomlin made it.
