So you had to go back 54 years to find a Steelers team worse, and that's a good thing?

Worst point differenciel since 1970 for the steelers is at -85 in 1988...They are at -57 with 3 games left,so this is possible they break it....

This is hyperbole. Steelers were really bad in 1988....5-11. 1999.....6-10. 2003.....6-10.

Those teams were arguably worse than 2023 Steelers. 2 were coached by Cowher, 1 by Noll.

I want Tomlin gone too....but some perspective is needed.

Yes we suck right now, but how many teams can say they've only had 4 top ten draft picks (not counting trading up) in the past 50 plus years? Three of those four came in a 4 year span. We haven't had a top 5 pick since 1970. Even when we suck we're never at the bottom of the league. The Steelers have consistently fielded teams that stayed in the playoff picture year after year.

I'm saying this because we've become spoiled. We expect to compete for the Super Bowl every year. Meanwhile there are fans of other teams who'd give their left nut for just 1 winning season. (Insert trade Tomlin to them joke here). We suck, but it's almost guaranteed to be a temporary suck. We lived through the mid 80s, and we'll survive the mid 20s. Hang in there

One of the lines that describes the 80's best (I think came from a Rooney in the scouting dept, may be wrong), 'In the 70's we had a hard time cutting, in the 80's we did not know when to stop' lol, not perfect recollection but close.

there are 32 team every year seeking that SB, I get what you are saying, until recently it was 37.5% made the playoffs, now its nearly 45%, almost half. It's not about being spoiled, to me it's being competitive, and we have not seen that for several years. You can't look at this 7 win team and say they are competitive, yes some of the games were close, but that does not mean they were competitive, at times the D did hold, but more often stupid mistakes by the other team kept us in, and that happens, but I could feel more confidence seeing a team with a losing record, being coached up, still playing well and accept that growth is a part of better things to come. Right now I see nothing in that atmosphere.

It’s about th qb. Jim Caldwell almost went undefeated with Peyton Manning. He was winless at Detroit. Cowher had Kordell as qb and defense that was in transition.

But Chuck was getting ready to work his magic and turn the franchise around. Tomlin has turned the franchise around too…only in the opposite direction.

I remember the 1969 team well. We won our first game against the Lions and then lost the next 13. Dick Shiner was the starting QB but after the team being 1-5 they switched to rookie Terry Hanratty and he went 0-8 to finish the year. That training camp has 2 great rookies Joe Greene and LC Greenwood and a free agent who once scored 4 TD's for Polk High, (Ed O'Neil from Youngstown State).

I admit that I didn't religiously watch football until the early 2000's. So while I followed the 90's teams, I didn't watch closely. I don't recall the 2003 team being as inept as this one, but that could be recency bias at play.

I was just commenting on the original post.

I don't want to be incorrect, and honestly may not recall this correctly, But as I recall it Noll was given the opportunity to stay, he just had to fire nearly all his staff (Joe Green exception)..now that may be bad memory or foldlore, but in the end he just felt it was time to hand it up.

How bad or good we are right now is not measured just in wins and losses. This entire season, my brother and I have talked about it many times. We have both said that the Steelers were not as good as their win rate would make it look like. At the end of the day, a win is a win. But we have not played like a team with the record we have had should be playing. As an example, we lost to teams with only two wins late in the season two games in a row. A seven and four team does not lose to a team that's two and 10 twice in a row.

Jim Caldwell had 3 winning season in 4 season in Detroit...Never been winless....His only awful season was in 2011 with the colts(2-14) when Peyton Manning was out for the season but the colts had zero plan B at the QB position that year

Cowher make 2 AFC title game with Kordell

    I remember those days - the 60's.
The old man was at his best.
To steal a passage, "my father wove a tapestry of obscenity, that as far as we know, is still hanging in space over Pittsburgh.”
