Ben may have had his issues but I guarantee Tomlin would have had multiple losing seasons and quite possibly long gone without Ben saving his hide. Ben is the only QB in NFL history to never have a losing season while he was playing. Say what you want about Ben, but he is definitely a HOF first ballot and a generational talent that we were forutnate to have on this team.

Who was the top notch RB between 2009 and 2011?

Rashard Mendenhall...Give me a break...I am not sure that Mike Wallace was a top notch WR at this time too even if he had his moments. He was our best WR during this time

I think his point was (if you're going to make an attempt to be intellectually honest) despite them being 7-4 did you really think they were 7-4 team? Or a more like a 2-9 team with a 7-4 record??

In all your scenarios with the exception of 2017 why is more blame being laid at the feet of Tomlin then the GM?? Isnt the GM responsible for putting the roster together that the coach has to work with? If not, then what is the role of the GM?? Also you make it seem like it's so simple to have depth at multiple positions. Never mind the salary cap, how late in the season these issues occurred, and the level of talent that's actually available to bring into the fold off of the waiver wire. Is Andy Reid an idiot because they couldn't find suitable receivers to replace Tyrese hill this year?? If you play fantasy football and you have a 10-12 team league (or more) what level of talent do you think at this time of year is sitting out there on the waiver wire??

2017 Harrison couldn't have helped the Steelers anymore then I could have. How do you defend the horrible start the offense got off to in that game and spotting the Jaguars 21 points with Blake Bortles as QB. It didn't help that Ryan Shazier suffered a career ending injury earlier in the season, but there was no way to replace that man in the middle.

The word was Troy approached Tomlin about the two sets of rules one for Ben and one for the rest of the guys. If that guy is saying there is a problem there is a problem. Emanuel Sanders saying Ben wasn't a leader, etc. All ancient history now and frustrating. You can't be buddy buddy with your players, it doesn't work unless they are well established mental disciplined players. Young and coddled players today, no way. They need a firm hand or you get the off rails the behavior.

Yes, the Steelers 7-4 record was legitimate. They were winning games in old school fashion. Sound defense and protect the ball. Steelers won a lot of games this way, especially pre- Big Ben.

They were like this pre big Ben where they were constantly losing going into the fourth quarter, and were outgained yardage wise every single game with poor qb play?? Doesnt this also contradict the narrative thats been pushed the last few weeks that Steelers culture had been lost if by your own words you say "they were winning in old school fashion"??

Winning in old school fashion and culture are two entirely different things. Just because they were eeking out victories doesn't mean that team culture was where it should be.

Wins are wins. Losses are losses. If you protect the ball, create turnovers, and play sound defense you are going to have a chance to win most games. Yardage means absolutely nothing. You don't get any points for yards gained.

Excuses, excuses, and more excuses. First off, a GM's job goes deeper than just talent acquisition. Mike Tomlin has more than ample say in roster moves.

When you have a team that is a legitimate Super Bowl contender you can not sit by and not address depth as a season goes by. There are always guys out there. No one is suggesting they break the bank. But you have to address roster concerns whenever they become clear weaknesses, especially when you have a chance to win a championship that year.

Arrogance and complacency were the reasons these things were not addressed. I'm willing to give Colbert his share of blame. But I will not absolve Tomlin of his.

This year, it's a collapse but that's not surprising since our offense was awful all year long..Like bottom 5 bad.....In the good seasons under Cowher, our offense has never been bad like that(they had a dominant running game, like very often in the top 5 or 10 at least) and they were great in time of possession.....In every season the only season the offense was awful under Cowher was in 1998. They also started the season 7-4 before finishing at 7-9.

And our defense were also much better under Cowher and this year defense. The steelers are in bottom 10 in rushing defense and it has been a problem for several years now

Hey, how do we know our coaches, GM or owner doesn't talk to an imaginary person in an imaginary chair?

Yards is not the only stat that matters but it's still important....Hard to be a good offense while being bottom 5-10 in yards....You need a dominant special team or defense that creates turnovers like crazy. The steelers had also a negatif point differenciel of -20 or worst for most of the season(right now they are at -57(!!!!) and they were at -23 when they were 7-4)The steelers had always a positive point differenciel in the winning season under Cowher...This year is a collapse but it was never a good team if we weren't blinded

you must be confusing excuses for facts, because where was the lie at in anything i said?? Lets also look at whats taken place since this awesome start you've been talking about...

    - starting qb gone

    - ilb position decimated...including backups (which blows your statement that you have to address depth as the season goes by out of the water)

    - you lose two safeties (really 3 if you include Neal)

    - and despite getting rid of your OC you're still stuck with his playbook.

First of all your delusion is at an all time peak if you think you can keep losing players at key positions and yet think there are players of equal or better value just sitting out there on the waiver wire. Even with using due diligence they couldnt have planned for this. You cant absolve Tomlin of personnel issues but he's not responsible for Trubisky being here, Rudolph or for that matter even Pickett. Yes the offensive schemes they work behind are his fault since he had a lot to do with the Canada hire but lets not then act like this 7-4 team was a true 7-4 team. I still maintain Tomlin is suitable for the team but they need a top notch OC and a competent QB....and oh yeah yards don't score points, but you're not going to score a lot without them either and averaging less than 16 points a game (which is not all offensive....that includes defensive scores) is not obviously not something that was sustainable.

Yep, and what you just wrote is exactly why I started the thread. I bet you can find a similar post of yours defending Tomlin from last year, the year prior, 5 years ago... It just keeps going. Boo Hoo, the team has adversity. Most teams do along the way. The job of a head coach is to plan ahead for moments of adversity and to keep the team focused along the way.

Please remember this thread during next year's collapse. Just search this thread, then you can copy and paste the standard "It's not Tomlin's fault" excuses when the Steelers are 7-7 again.

This made me curious, so I looked up stats for this season.

Top 10 teams, yards gained (14 games for all): MIA, SF, DET, BUF, BAL, DAL, KC, LAR, HOU, and MIN. San Francisco, Baltimore and Dallas have clinched playoff berths; Miami, Detroit and Kansas City lead their divisions; Los Angeles sits at the #7 seed; and only Buffalo and Houston currently are outside their conference's top 7.

So 8 of 10 are currently holding a playoff spot; the others are the first two teams outside looking in. Yards do seem to correlate to performance or, at least, making the playoffs.
