Happy 2013 Steeler Nation! Now that the calendar has flipped we can count down the days until our boys are back. I don't follow the college game like others so I was wondering what this year's draft has in terms of prospects? I know we are at #17 and hopefully a glaring need is addressed for us. I'm sure this one won't be as productive as last year's with RGIII, Luck, and Russell Wilson but maybe there are a few diamonds in the rough. Anyone been scouting and have any info?

Overall, I think this draft class lacks talent compared to last year draft class. As far as what the Steelers do with the 1st pick, it could go a number of ways. A lot of Board readers here want Teo from Notre Dame, but I think we would have to trade up to get him. Plus the NFL combine plays into these things a lot. You can have a guy projected at #20 and he can go into the top 10 if he puts up huge combine numbers.

I might catch flak for saying this but, I think the Steelers should trade down, to later in the 1st round. Try to pick up more 2nd and 3rd round picks, and try to get a later 1st round. We have multiple needs and we need guys who can try to start from day 1.

And I think TTF will move your post to the draft forum. Go there and you can see everybody's opinion.

i usually wait until after all the underclassmen declare and the combine is over, but initially, the draft appears to be strong among lbers (inside and out) and wrs

My personal opinion is that we need 3 things on defense out of this draft....

    1. An Outside rushing LB who can get pressure on the QB consistently.

    2. An heir apparent safety for one of the 2 safety positions.

    3. A middle linebacker to help consistently stop the run.

    Why for each of these?

    1. Harrison may not be back due to retirement or getting cut. Woodley needs to find his explosiveness. He used to be fast off the line....no more. I would ask Woodley the following...how did Worilds get more sacks than you with less playing time? Look in the mirror and figure it out. Carter is an unknown still. Robinson seems to be on the "outs" due to his being a one trick pony. Of course that one trick is what we really struggled with, but he still didn't see the field.

    2. I am fine with Golden and Allen as backups, but we kept 5 this year and we can again. We need to start looking to groom someone.

    3. Spence is an unknown. Sylvester is not going to be a starter in this league (I always thought he should be an OLB). Timmons is fine. Foote made a bunch of plays this year and led the team in tackles, but he is prone to overpursuit. Even if you bring Foote back at a really low cost a long term solution needs to be found.

    Why not other positions?

I do think there are other things we need to look at, but those above would be my top 3 in the draft. WR, RB, Backup QB, and TE would be my top things to look at, but after those top 3 impact people, you can look almost anywhere on this roster.

Overall a pretty weak draft. I haven't started doing too much evaluation yet, but I think it is strong at safety, which is nice for us.

I agree. There's not much value at the top of the draft but ALOT of value in the 2nd-4th rounds..

That pretty much nails my opinion on this draft(ol,dl,s).

Please don't trade up or draft Manti T'eo in the first round!
