I remember Joe Haden getting a flag on a similar play a few years back that really cost us. It was even less egregious than this games play.. reffing in the NFL is super inconsistent

That is an excellent comparison. The defender got an advantage on the receiver by making contact early and there was no call. At the very least it should have been illegal contact, if not interference.
