Thinking about the Steelers having the number one defense in the league and a 8-8 record , wondering how could this be. Well there was one other team that accomplished this feat.
"The 1977 season featured the stingiest defense in the Super Bowl Era – the Falcons – a team which surrendered just 9.21 PPG but won just half its games (7-7) because of its inability to score in a season dominated by defense (the 1977 Falcons offense averaged just 12.79 PPG)." Another person found this info for me.
We averaged 21 PPG. this year. Crazy.

Actually Bartkowski was hurt a lot that year, the Falcons used a retread named Scott Hunter, who had more in common with Lefty.

1977 was a low scoring year in general, so the Falcons great performance was not that much of an outlier.

to their credit, the Falcons got better and made the playoffs in 1978 and 1980- after upgrading their running game and getting Bartkowski healthy.

remember the Steelers where ranked #1 based on yards allowed per game not points per game. they were #6 in the league in points allowed.

They were known as the "Grits Blitz." And the DB coach was Jerry Glanville.

8-8 is what happens when your O is 22nd in total points and 21st in total yards. The #1 defense wasn't enough to overcome the underachieving offense and lame ST (except for Suisham. He was the ST bright spot)
