Why does Tomlin talk up his opponents so much?

Every week during his pre game press conference Tomlin always raves on and on about how great his opposing team is, it's almost as if he's trying to psych-out himself and his team from winning. I don't know about you guys, but I find it kind of strange. Also, he seems to know more about his opposing players than his own :lolol:

Honestly, I think he is trying to show respect for the opponent and to avoid any bulletin board material. Nobody needs to provide extra motivation to your opponent. It is also is telling your own players in a way that their opponent has weapons and play makers, etc.

I get that, but he just seems to go a little overboard with it. Maybe it's the same way with other coaches, I don't know because I rarely if ever watch other coaches press conferences

Nobody, and I mean nobody talks up the opponents more than Bill Belichick. You would think He is facing Tom Brady, A. Rodgers, or P Mahomes every week. Hell He even talked up Trubisky. LoL

I hear you man, sounds like something he would do. I saw a YouTube video of a Belichick press conference where a reporter ask him why do teams need a specialized long snapper, and he went on for about 10 minutes explaining the history, the role, and the importance of long snappers. It was actually quite fascinating

If you see him outside his "coach" mode Belichick seems to have a pretty good personality with a good sense of humor. He'd make a great TV analyst if he wanted to. You'd actually learn something from him.

It would be fun to have a coach act like a WWE Wrestlemania preview. “We re gonna kick their sorry butt up and down the field!! They are a bunch of jabronie losers!”

Yea on a list of MT flaws, which there are plenty, this would be pretty low on that list.

All Coaches do this. Paterno was a huge abuser of it.

Partly it's not giving them any bulletin board material. Partly it's trying to keep their team from underestimating the opponent.

And sometimes, it's cover so if they lose, they can say "See? I told you guys they were good!" (It's not that we sucked out loud)

Please god no. The guy has the personality of a dying banana plant. It takes a lot to kill em even if they are already 99% dead.

Would you like him to trash his opponents instead? Lou Holtz was the worst at doing this when he was at Notre Dame.

I'm no fan of Tomlin, but I never had a problem with him talking up the competition - I'd think even less of him if he didn't. Of course, if the underlying idea is to force the players on the team to take even their least fearsome opponents more seriously, it would seem as though most of them are not getting the memo.

Why is this even a question?? God given sense escapes some people sometimes I guess? as if there isn't enough with this team to b and m about.

I'm not really sure why this bothers anybody. Coaches have been doing this since the sport started.

Tomlin didn't start the Lying Coaches Club.

This is the way that coaches speak to respect the coming opponent. Nearly all coaches do this.
