Muth being back I think gave Kenny more confidence throwing over the deep middle of the field. I also think by utilizing the entire field puts a stress on our opponents defense and helping both the running game and WRs. I know it’s only 1 game and Kenny is still missing open guys but I like what I saw yesterday and I am hoping the play calling continues to be aggressive.

One play call i hope to see less of is this WR screen, it has been a complete mess and most times leads to a loss of yardage or a holding call. It would also be nice if our WRs ran north/south once they catch it.

Speaking of holding calls, what is up with Punt Return on this team. Do we ever block an opposing gunner without holding them? Amazing how that part of the game has been totally removed from this team, no threat of changing the field position or scoring.

Pat indeed had nine catches for 120 yards yesterday. He was also around at the beginning of the year and totaled eight catches for 53 yards over four games. Having him back was a definite boost for Pickett, but I think there was more to Kenny's challenging deeper and middle-of-the-field throws than just Muth's return. That's a good thing.

Screens require the defense to bite in a certain direction. RB screens often work by allowing the interior defenders to get penetration and rush the QB, who then tosses the ball over their head to the RB, who then enters the second level. Since the overall passing game has been so weak of late, particularly downfield, the WR screen has often been eaten up by defenders over-pursuing things closer to the LOS. We've even seen this happen on RB screens out in the flat; Pickett damn near threw a pick on one to Harris a couple of games ago because the LB didn't bite at all and stuck with Najee.

He was big, and set the tone for some optimism on that first play

Speaking of big, even Washington got in on the act. I'm dying to see him catch one with some momentum going downfield to watch some dbs fear for their lives

A QB with no tight end, scared play calling and a bad oline isn’t going to do much. Glad Kenny had the deck stacked his way for once and silenced a bunch of over the top critics yesterday.

It makes no sense that Canada didn't use Muth in the passing game.

Maybe not as big as we think considering he was back the previous game and in the 4 previous games he had played in prior to his injury hadnt done or been targeted much. Maybe just better play calling and tweaks in the play design more so then anything else. It doesn't hurt that all eyes are on Kenny now and he knows he has to step it up regardless of who's out there.

Huge, just as a good running game is for a young QB.

Getting rid of Canada was the biggest contributing factor. Pat was there the week before and at the beginning of the season. Nothing really really changed until Canada was fired.

Muth is an awesome receiving threat... hope he improves at blocking. So far.. he's been Ladarius Green 2.0, the Chargers version.

Pat is a very good TE.

I'm a Penn State Fan, I watched Jesse James, Mike Gesiki, and Pat.

Pat is the most talented of the bunch. He just has to stay healthy. Which is the hardest thing for him to over come.

I worry about his concussion issues and long term health.

Also a player we need to increase TD production in the red zone.

I like Heyward and Washington, but they don't have the receiving threats that Muth brings to the table.

Future reference keep a eye on Tyler Warren, maybe the next up and coming Penn State TE that could be NFL bound some day.

Canada wasn't the one throwing the ball

I think Freiermuth's lack of production early in the season was due to a mixture of reasons. Part of it was Canada's aversion to throwing passes to the middle of the field, but I also think he was hurting. That chest injury seemed to take a lot out of him.

Lamar looks to be struggling without Andrews. Not many points at all against the Chargers.

They only scored 13 points until a minute to go in the game. They could have just taken a knee and ran out the clock but in typical Harbaugh fashion they kept running the ball and scored a TD. I was hoping that they would fumble and have it blow up in their face.

    But
But he was the idiot calling the plays, it wasn't Pickett who had Muth blocking instead of running routes, what do you know new OC and Muth had 9 receptions play calling matters.
