I thought I might put together a hot board of candidates.

    In House

    Eddie Faulkner - Interim OC/RB
    Mike Sullivan - Interim OC/QB
    Glenn Thomas - Offensive Assistant

    Tied to the franchise

Todd Haley - Former Memphis (USFL) Head Coach
Byron Leftwich - Former Tampa Bay OC
Antwaan Randle El - Detroit WR Coach
Hines Ward - San Antonio (XFL) Head Coach
Mark Whipple - Former Pitt OC

Head Coaches that might be/are available

    Brian Daboll - NY Giants
    Josh McDaniels - Las Vegas
    Frank Reich - Carolina
    Arthur Smith - Atlanta

    Outside the organization

    Brian Angelichio - Minnesota PGC/TE
    Darrell Bevell - Miami PGC/QB
    Eric Bienemy - Washington OC
Joe Bleymaier - Kansas City PGC
Joe Brady - Buffalo Interim OC/QB
Ken Dorsey - Former Buffalo OC
    Tanner Engstrand - Detroit PGC
David Girardi - Kansas City QB
Brian Griese - San Francisco QB
Jay Gruden - LA Rams OA
Pep Hamilton - Former Houston OC
Bo Hardegree - Las Vegas Interim OC/QB
    Jerrod Johnson - Houston QB
Klint Kubiak - San Francisco PGC
    Ben McDaniels - Houston PGC/WR
Kellen Moore - LA Chargers OC
    Kevin Patullo - Philadelphia PGC
    Dan Pitcher - Cincinnati QB
    Chad O'Shea - Cleveland PGC/WR
Zac Robinson - LA Rams PGC/QB
    Brian Schottenheimer - Dallas OC
    Alex Tanney - Philadelphia QB
Shea Tierney - NY Giants QB

    College

    Brennan Carroll - Arizona OC/OL
    Liam Coen - Kentucky OC/QB
    Ryan Grubb - Washington OC/QB
Brian Hartline - Ohio State OC/WR
    Tommy Rees - Alabama OC/QB
    Will Stein - Oregon OC/QB

    My thoughts:

    • I don't think the interim coaches or guys with Steeler ties should be options. My fear is that Tomlin will just hand them the playbook and tell them to run whats there.
    • I'd like to see someone from the SF/Shanahan tree be considered. It's the most versatile offense run in the NFL today IMHO.
    • The odds are probably very low that a college coach would be considered but I thought it might be interesting to discuss.

Good job putting the list together. I agree with the Shanahan tree. There are only two SF names there, Griese and Kubiak so I suppose it would be Kubiak from that list.
A former head coach like Reich or Daboll would be good too.

If I had to pick one it’s Griese. I was chatting with family over the summer and he’s who I tabbed as my guy if we got rid of Canada.

I think Bevell would be my second choice.

They should find someone named Mexico. That way we have all of the neighboring countries covered.

So honestly, I think Brian Hartline will probably be the Ohio State OC then head coach at some point in his future... but man would I LOVE to have him work with Pickens. He is a great recruiter of the position (talent evaluator) and he elevates his guys into superstars.

That being said; Daboll and Bevell would be good options

I'd really like to get Ben Johnson too. Maybe we could sell it as his ticket to a head coaching gig in the future. Tomlin wont be around forever and if he led a successful offense, he'd be a pretty easy succession plan.

I think Daboll gets another year, the Giants have been wrecked by injuries this season.

I started a thread earlier this season about hiring Brian Griese as OC.

No to former players, go outside of the organization to make the hire.

Kevin Patullo (Eagles Pass Game Coordinator)
    Klint Kubiak (49ers Pass GameCoordinator)
Darrell Beville (Dolphins QB Coach/Pass Game Coordinator)

As for guys like Randel El, Hines Ward, Lefty and Whipple, I wouldn't mind bring in any of that combination as the QB Coach or Pass Game Coordinator. I wouldn't mind kicking the Bienemey tires but he's going to interview for a HC gig first and I'd rather get someone in my shortlist than put my eggs in one basket with Bienenemey. I really want someone with history of developing QBs. I thought of Griese, but he's only in his first year as QBC. Another year or two on his resume I'd definitely want him. I'd like Joe Brady but if he's successful, he's likely Buffalo's OC.

As for the offensive staff as a whole, the only person on the staff worth retaining is Eddie Faulkner. Therefore, I'd like to see the new OC help bring in that new offensive staff as well, precisely why my shortlist is what it is.

I would not want Brian Griese.
That Shanahan tree is tough to beat.

I can't see anybody on the current staff that I would promote. They really need to go outside.
I've always supported the promote from within, but the Steelers hasn't really done a good job at backfilling with young up and comers.

Something I might do if I were Art - I'd hire Byron Leftwich now as an assistant and see what happens. They have a spot open, it can't hurt.
    Take a trial run.

I've heard rumors but the Steelers just don't operate that way, so none are worth typing out.

I don't have much knowledge regarding OC candidates. However, what are board member opinions regarding the recently fired OC from Buffaloe?

Say what you want but Coen did a great job with Will Levis at Kentucky. He’s also had two stints with the Rams. He’s at UK now but their current transfer QB sucks. The receivers are open all day long but drop a lot of passes. Get him and a good Oline coach.

Ken Dorsey. All I can say is that he has a lot of Panther ties. Bad/Good? I dunno.
I'm not really a fan of him though.

Lot of interesting names on that list. Thanks for putting it together. One guy I like, that no one will probably really consider, is Arthur Smith. He hasn't worked out as a HC but I do think he will be successful as an OC somewhere in the future. Not saying he's my favorite candidate, that's surely someone from the Shanahan tree, but I'd at least put Smith (if he's fired) on our interview list.

I can't stand him as HC. But he did improve tannehill to highest passer rating, competitions, and highest yards per catch. And he loves running backs. Dudes got a legit two on the falcons. And semi 3rd. Robinson is a beast. But algier is amazing as well. With patterson being very useful as well.

But yeah, as OC he can't get it together. Nor can their GM with their one year contracts. And their owner has issues as well.

Didn’t even click on the link. There’s no chance that happens. Ben has said he has no interest in being an NFL coach. And have people forgotten?? Ben wasn’t exactly known for being overly studious with his playbook. Why would anyone think he could put together a good offensive system?

    No Jimbo?

I like the idea of a guy that schemes to his player’s strengths and not just runs his system. Top of my list is Mike Norvell, current HC at FSU.

    Thanks for the List YinzerBuckeye!

No way I want to see Leftwich.

    Need one Rooney Rule interview.

No one associated with the Steelers or Tomlin.

    Ben??? :lolol:

Griese or Bevell. If the giants fire Daboll then bring him in for an interview.

The bottom line is Popcorn Tomlin cannot be trusted to fill this position. Khan, Weidl and Art II need to make the decision and i'm sure they are already looking.
