After the cuts and Belichek only keeping his starter there were the rumors he liked MR, but nothing came of it, but again if this we so why not sign him on the cheap in the off season? I get after a certain time MR scampering back to take what he could get in a system he knows, and the Steelers signing him for exactly that reason, to make nearly a million at vet min to sit on the bench and extend my retirement bennies is a no brainer, but the guy has to feel defeated. lol

I thought about this same thing during the summer when no other team even gave him a phone call. I didn't want to open up a can of worms but since it's been opened over 70% of the players in the league are minorities. Even if less than half of them believe the lie that spewed out from Garrett that's still around 20 players on any team that might believe Garrett's statement. Like someone said before Rudolph just isn't that good for any team to bring in someone that 20 or so players will resent him being there.

I didn't think he was terrible vs the Lions which I believe was his last start. Granted the game ended in a tie and the Lions stunk that year, but the weather was terrible for that game much more than this past Sunday. I don't think and I hope teams don't show interest based upon a heat of the moment play in which Myles Garrett went crazy. Mason is older now & has never done much. You could say that about many of the backups, so I do not know exactly why no other teams would show interest. Possibly they did for the league min just as he signed with Pitt and maybe he thought it'd be easier to stay with the Steelers.

& i don't want to get into politics at all bc its pointless but Mason does or did support a certain person you aren't allowed to admit in a public setting you support. He was caught deleting tweets. Possibly they don't want that drama with a backup even though I'm sure there'd be 0 drama.

And a person of color stepped up to his defense and started wailing away on the race baiter. I loved Pouncey’s reaction that night even though it got him suspended.

I doubt the helmet incident has much sway since he was never considered to be the one in the wrong (outside of Cleveland of course). There is no evidence that the racial tone of anything allegedly said during the incident was taken seriously.

As for 32 other back ups better than him... The belief around the league is that there are at least 50-60+ backups better than him, as evidenced by 31 other NFL teams not being interested in him at league minimum (not every team carries 3 QB's). His play on the field was pretty putrid when he did play (he turned an otherwise pretty good offensive unit in 2019 into one that rivaled this year's offense for futility), and a positive W/L ratio is more happenstance from getting carried by the defense and the TD/INT ratio is about the only other positive stat he has. We decry Trubisky for throwing too many picks, but Rudolph gets intercepted for his career at a higher rate per pass than Trubisky so I am not sure that the positive TD/INT ratio isn't just a fluke from a small sample size.

There is also the fact that he hasn't won a start since 2019 and is winless in his last 3 starts (he was credited with a "won start" 4 starts ago but was replaced mid game that game with Duck Hodges for poor performance). His performance before that was a 4 pick turd to Cleveland where he was assaulted by Myles Garrett at the end of the game, so essentially his last 5 starts include 3 losses, a tie vs the worst team in the league at that time, and him getting benched for a guy no longer in the NFL. Couple the poor play with no clear evidence of progression, a lack of mobility, lack of pocket awareness, and not being known for being particularly accurate has probably led teams to want to look elsewhere at the QB position. Hard to get a lot of looks/suitors when he hasn't played much since 2019, hasn't won when he has, and the tape in 2019 was less than flattering.

There also comes a point where there is no longer "promise" of what could be in the future and Mason has passed that point. There might be younger players that aren't as good as him currently, but teams are willing to roll with due to the belief that their "ceiling" is higher than what Mason brings to the table currently. He is essentially a guy who has maxed out as a 3rd stringer, and most teams use that 3rd string role to mentor and develop a young guy with potential. Some teams exclusively use the practice squad for their 3rd string QB and only keep 2 rostered QB's.

I just don't see an avenue where he lasts in the league much longer. If the Steelers decide to try to develop a young guy as the future back up, his role is gone... and he will likely be out of the league and onto his life's work come the next season.

Thanks for that thorough exposition. While I disagree that there are 32 backups better than he is, I do agree with much of your reasoning. I will, however, dispute what you said about no one outside of Cleveland felt he was in the wrong. The night it happened, there were idiots on NFLN and ESPN (including Willie McGinness) who began speculating that Rudolph had to have said something to invoke that kind of response and those voices seemed to get louder in the days following. There was even an interview with Garrett in which he doubled down on his big fat lie that seemed to show him in a positive light. It was pathetic and shameful character assassination and I firmly believe that has at least something to do with Rudolph’s standing around the league.

Is Mason a controversial figure now like <Kaepernick> Is that the problem we can never be sure if he said N word or not, but Garret has not done anything like he did since .so you just don't know:confused1:.

There is absolutely nothing in Rudolph’s past that would indicate that he would have ever said that. The black players on his own team and his black head coach came forcefully to his defense. Myles Garrett is a LIAR. Period. Full stop.

Could Garrett’s big lie be playing a role? That’s my question. I personally believe that Rudolph is good enough to be a backup in the league but the BIG LIE may have sullied his reputation to the point that many teams just don’t think he’s worth the trouble.

I agree with Jack Attach but think the bigotry here is not race .Seems more like the case of Tim Tebo(?)another vert strond and outspoken Christian ,Tim not very good just good enough to beat us and then available for cheap and we wid not give him a shot. Politics? bigotry ? niether exceptable but they are both still a factor .

    Hmmm:hmm:
Funny....they thought the same about K. Warner numerous times. So many times he was working at a grocery store. I believe He now has HOF jacket. How about J. Harrison. Just a few examples, but there are many, many more. It shows the GMs of teams are not infallible, or there would be none of the aforementioned, or any 1st round draft bust.
I'm sure it doesn't fit the narrative....so it will be laughed at, said that's nice, or ignored.

The league has enough film on him to know what he brings, which isn't much...... during Mason's free agency, he said he wanted an opportunity to compete for a starting spot, which no one was going to give him.... He was forced to come back with his tail between his legs and accept a free check for doing nothing as opposed to being at home with no check for doing nothing.... (pretty easy choice).... If he accepts that he's a backup qb and nothing more, than he will have a chance to stick somewhere in the league

There's always going to be that narrative initially, especially when the accusation is using racially insensitive language in a league dominated by people who would take offense to the word being used to describe them. I honestly think that there may be individuals that believe that bs story, but the league can't see it that way without evidence. I guess if there is proof that this is how he is viewed around the NFL and it is keeping him from gainful employment, then he might have a defamation case against Myles Garrett. But I don't think that this is actually keeping him from being employed elsewhere. Richie Incognito had direct evidence of using this same word multiple times and he still found himself employed for multiple years after that. His scenario is far more egregious (as in, there's actual evidence of it being fact) and he still found work, so Idk why Mason wouldn't just for an accusation without evidence.

Seriously maybe it’s because Trubisky and Mason both suck?? All this talk of who should play between the two is comical. Kenny isn’t very good so far because of several potential reasons but is way better than either of them.

Mason Was A complete Dud this preseason.

If he had shown anything in preseason he would be a starting QB this season.

Label it how you want. I know very little about him except what I saw years ago, and I didn't exactly study him or take notes. Literally everything I read about him (and I read a ton of **** on our players because I have OCD with this stuff) said he doesn't have the strongest arm, doesn't always get a lot of velocity on his throws and will throw a lot of wobblers. I admit I don't really remember a lot of his throws, but if that's what he was known for coming out and he hasn't really played, then he probably hasn't improved in that area either. I will trust people far smarter than myself on this topic

MT can’t read defenses but is mobile, MR is better at reading defense but has trouble evading pressure. I’ll still take MR if I have to choose between the two - and with KP’s injury history, we might see more of one of them this season. Which maybe deserves its own thread: how durable is KP?

both backups might be gone after this season anyway
