It wasn't just Porter's mistake. It looked like Kazee wasn't as deep as he was supposed to be, which helped to create the opening.

Tomlin said after the game that it was a communication breakdown and the defensive backs weren't all on the same page. This is one of the many ways that losing Fitzpatrick hurts. Much of the communication in the secondary goes through him. Throw in his man-to-man coverage skills and outstanding run defense and it is a devastating loss for the defense.

That isn't to say Porter didn't also mess up, but it wasn't all his mistake.

Similar to cornerbacks and goldfish, most Steelers fans have very short memories.;+)

I think a lot of that was a mistake by Kazee with no over the top help.

    Mis-communication on both parts.

But JP Jr will have his screw ups, he's a rookie, he won't always be perfect.

He is still better to play than Levi Wallace.

Oh Kazee screwed up as well and took a terrible angle, but make no mistake that was Porter’s man and he screwed up. He even owned up to it in his post game

He has not yet hit the old Pittsburgh Fans “He Sucks” status and therefore everyone buries their head in the sand. Once he hits that mark then it is no holds barred as for criticism.

It wasn't his man. Was under and over the top coverage on which kazee didn't execute.

Give jpj credit, he took ownership.

That wasn't on porter.... that was on the safety....
If anything, you should shout out his hustle in nearly preventing the td

No doubt, but does it require a thread? He's a rookie. He blew a coverage. It's going to happen. He wasn't the only one who blew the coverage on that play. The veteran safety screwed up, too.

Porter did say after the game that he also messed up on the play.

Not a lot to say really. He made a mistake. It happens. It will happen again I'm sure. That's the nature of football a lot of the time. Mistakes lead to points.
I still like his upside and want to see him continue to get playing time.

I saw the play live, but can't remember now. Was it man or zone? Was he expecting to pass his man off to Kazee? Or even in man, was he covering underneath and expecting the double team help to be deeper than it was?

I think that has something to do with the fact that we are okay if he screws up from time to time because he is also the only CB that is making plays out there too. CB is a position where you are going to get beat. For TD's a lot of times too. He let his man get too much separation by looking in the backfield, but he also was expecting safety help which never came. Both parties have blame. This hasn't been a recurring issue like other ones we've had so no point in blowing it out of proportion. Porter allows few receptions/yards and this was the first big play all year. A mistake was made, unfortunate. We move on.

I mean, all players are going to make mistakes, but we don't have to point out every specific instance. I get that you're saying this b/c of the praise for perfect coverage he's had, but players have blown coverages all the time and it's not thread worthy, even for someone who has done well as a rookie to this point.

Whether or not someone else screwed up doesn’t absolve another player of their screwup

What a dumb thread. If he’s blowing coverages every game after his 10th start, then come make a thread.

I knew Porter Jr was fast but he caught Etienne from behind after Etienne had a good 5 yard advantage on him. That kind of speed is really impressive even though Etienne did cross the goal line as he was being tackled.

Porter played it perfectly. Kazee was the idiot that tried to be a hero and ended up looking like a clown.

man. He's proving to be one of our best Defensive backs. So he missed a coverage. He's a rookie and will get better we've seen that improvement from him. So yeah let's excoriate for that. Everyone misses once in a while. He will probably not do that again. Our putrid offense makes every mistake a bad one. Our defense isn't overall very good either. So ok. Let's blame him for that.

Tomlin said there was miscommunication on the play, so it sounds like Porter and Kazee weren't on the same page. Part of it was a screw-up by Porter. Part by Kazee. Part was probably the absence of Fitzpatrick, who plays a big role in the communication in the secondary.

what is your problem? You latch on to something like a blown coverage and think we should all be upset over it? Why are you harping on this when the team has far more issues that Joey Porter missing a coverage. Kazee took a horrible angle on that play as well. Never mind. Just forget it
