Anybody see the Jets and Cleveland games? They both took down dominant teams witch high powered offenses. What do those defenses have that we don’t?

Per my observation they have great cornerbacks and big dominant defensive lineman. They prioritize stopping the run first to make teams one dimensional and put teams in third and long. They keep their middle linebackers clean so they can flow to the ball and make plays. Their back end is solid both at safety and especially at cornerback. Their cornerbacks can match up one on one on the perimeter to free up the safeties to roam the middle of the field and help the linebackers out in coverage and in the run game if need be. Their cornerbacks support the run and make tackles on the perimeter to prevent big chunk runs on outside zone.

What do we have = TJ Watt and Alex Highmsith. Not only that we don’t even ask our edge players to set the edge often and contain we ask them to crash in and support the interior defensive lineman on inside zones or runs up the A and B Gap. As a result we lose outside contain and put all the stress on are already inept and poor tackling corners.

Our defense is completely sold out to the big splash play and we effectively have only two players on the whole defense that can create splash right now. Minkah is neutralized because we are asking him to cover for way to many other iniefficienes on the back end.

So much of this could be solved with two big interior Defensive lineman to plug up the interior and actually going out and getting quality cornerbacks. I believe we have one that could be but we are not starting him. We need another one.

We need to go trade for Jeremy Chinn and put him next to Minkah. Start Benton and Porter and hold on until Heyward gets back. Next year draft a CB high and go get the DT from Miami Sieler I believe his name is and then get a real D Coordinator to coach the team from outside of the organization like Cleveland did with Jim Schwartz. It may hurt Tomlin pride a little but I think it will make a huge difference.

I believe the Steelers beat the Browns. So how does that fit the equation? Remember, any given Sunday, Monday, Thursday and occasional Saturday. It's not simply black and white or x's and o's.

There's no transitive property in football.

And he was talking about competing against high power offenses. I don't think Cleveland qualifies (plus, we likely lose that game if Chubb doesn't go down early).

I'm not sure what the answer is, but it's a decent point to ponder. Our defense does seem to be splash play or bust.

Jets were missing a lot of their secondary including Sauce and they still stifled the Eagles. I don’t know enough about football to say exactly how they did it but it was very impressive. They seemed to be getting a lot of pressure which always helps

There's no comparison right now between our D and the Browns' D. They are far superior. In fact, I think they are the best defense in the NFL. They are on a historic pace right now with the fewest yards allowed through 5 games for over 50 years. All we have is Watt and Highsmith like the OP said. I think it mainly starts up front with the D line. Good interior linemen can make a whole defense look better. Cleveland rarely needs to rush more than 4 and can still get pressure. Plus that style fits Schwarz to a tee.

That said, they should have still lost to the 49ers if their stinking kicker can make a relatively easy FG.

That being said, SF kicked the living crap out of us and everyone else they faced. It was still an impressive win by Cleveland regardless, plus they had a backup in at QB.

Jets have an impressive front 4. They get after the QB and crush rushing games.

Sure does. No consistency in just playing solid whether it be stopping the run or defending the pass.

We are stuck in nowhere land in the Tomlin "limbo D." And it doesn't quite "cut it." He obviously doesn't grasp the 3-4 D and what the DL is all about with the 3-4. He's stuck in the middle between the 3-4 and the Tampa 4-3. You have to choose one of the other and he's trying to be both; it doesn't work. Instead of drafting DLmen who are absolute studs vs. the rush, he still is making picks of DLmen who can rush the passer but our LBs are supposed to do that job. Take the way they've been mis-drafting the NT position: You need a monster "immovable object" in the middle, not a QB sacker. But he doesn't get it. Even Hargrave, who is a damn fine 4-3 DT is not really a fit for a 3-4 NT. But Tomlin just doesn't get it.

They hire a legit DC, who on his own accord, is a great football mind. And voila, they have a great D. Pgh? In the Tomlin era, only promote in-house duds for all their coordinator jobs, leading to inferior coaching but hey, at least they are in-house lackies who know how to kowtow to master Tomlin. And we wonder why we haven't won a playoff game in 6 years.

Both teams play with urgency, and have IDL that can stop run.
Lbs that fill quickly not 6 yds from LOS.Kwon Alexander needs to be on field
He can be a difference maker JPJ should be on field let him take his lumps.

Our defense didn’t allow a single point or even a single 1st down this week. I don’t know what you guys are crying about.

A win is a win (or so we have been told), SF was down Deebo and Mccaffery, not easy to overcome, but the browns were without Chubb and had a b/u Qb..so any given Sunday. Beyond that even good teams have off weeks, but that Browns D is real and with cold weather coming can pose problems for most they face.

Any one of the three divisional rivals are capable of being defensive monsters with the Steelers on the schedule x2.

So the Jets lost to the NE, and We beat the Browns, and people can say well if if....well if 49ers make a pretty easy field goal the browns lose. This is why they play the games, and the season isn't only 5 weeks long.

Just for balance, worth remembering as Vox says that the 49ers lost their two best weapons in Samuels and McCaffery, there were two absolutely phantom calls to give the Browns the go ahead score, and the 49ers were in a great place to win but for two uncharacteristic misses from their kicker.

The Browns defense is good but there are multiple factors at work here

The Briwns played without Chubb and Watson. The win in this case really wasn’t the main point. The fact the game was close and SF didn’t blow out the Briwns like they did to us is what us telling. It says a lot about our scheme and coaching in both sides of the ball.

mccaffery and debo getting hurt along with their starting LT may have helped the browns as well. we didn't have that help. they were fresh in game one against us. big difference without those players.

Not sold on Austin as a DC. Not as down on him as I am Canada, but they get pushed around in the run game and have lived largely on "splash" plays this year. Thankfully, we have the best edge rushing combo in football or we'd be toast. Too much inconsistency. And for goodness sake, please learn how to use Minkah Fitzpatrick.

49ers lost CMC and then Deebo. Then when Purdy lost those two stars he struggled when leaned on a bit.
Then the kicker missed a kick, I blame a lot of that Lake Erie weather on the struggles of the 49ers as well.
But also look at the Browns defense they been very good all year and really good at home!!!!
Still no excuse to lose to PJ Walker and the Browns. But, its the NFL this stuff happens.

Jets defense is carrying the Jets big time and really Jalen Hurts hasn't played wonderfully tons of INTs for him thus far this year!

Its the NFL sometimes bad weeks by good teams happen.

Trust me in the end the 49ers and Eagles will be on the verge of going to the Bowl, and the Jets or Browns will barely have a chance at a playoff spot at best.

Of course it's a big difference, but Cleveland still beat them, got to give them credit where it's due.And SF beat us so thoroughly, it sure looked like they could have done it minus those players.

It says a lot about matchups and timing, such as the Browns catching the 49ers in a week when Samuel and McCaffrey got hurt. It is also a reminder that games snowball. For example, early in the 2020 season, the Steelers obliterated the Browns. In the playoffs that same season, the Browns returned the favor.

Remember, the Steelers beat the Browns, so it's not like there is some huge gap between the two teams.
