Did Pickett change the play?

Canada wanted to run a triple reverse with Gunner. The TD was great but imagine that reverse play being executed to the house!

My wife and I seriously joked about that at that very moment!!! We said, look at Canada …. He’s pissed Kenny called his own play!!!!

God, I hope he did call his own play. I'm glad we won the game but fear any chance of Canada getting the boot during the bye week went out the window.

 

It doesn't even have to be Pickett ignoring Canada's call. Tomlin may have told Kenny to make the call. Or maybe the headset didn't work and Kenny didn't get the play call and had to call a play himself. You never know.

 

Canada's reaction was rather strange. Almost as if he was watching a game he had no stake in.

 

A better question is if Mike Sullivan took over play calling duties in the second half?!


I do apologize to the mods as I have brought this comment up in perpetuity. However, why else would Canada have such a reaction?! As I had recently stated before, OCs are more often than not very pleased, if not elated, when a scoring play happens; doubly so one that can either put the game away or brings the team back to victory. Canada seems very melancholy about it though; a dazed expression to top it all off.


The audible alone is interesting in it of itself but I don't believe that to be why Canada looks in the sense that he does. Now granted and, to the OPs point, we recently just heard that Pickett's ability to audible comes down to both Tomlin and Canada... even though this is Pickett's Offense to run given how he is the defacto QB 1. Such comments by Tomlin from weeks ago would add further fuel to the fire given how Canada seemingly wants to control what the Offense runs. That said, Tomlin is quite excited about it while Canada is not. Something isn't adding up here between the two.


Heck, even if this was a limited capacity, would it be fair to speculate that Sullivan overwritten that play call and authorized Pickett to audible out of it?! Remember that Mike Sullivan is a former OC himself and has years of knowledge at his disposal. It wouldn't be too crazy to think that he would have some say in the game plan given how he is the QB Coach.



What makes this mystery even more intriguing is that the bye week is coming up. Recall on how so many reports have been coming out about Canada losing his job should the Steelers showcase the same ineptitude following the Ravens game?! Well.... for nearly two thirds of the game... that is what the Offense was. It was not until the Fourth Quarter that the Offense showcased some semblance of life.


This leads me to my theory;


Mike Sullivan must have taken over play calling duties during the final stretches of the game due to how incapable the Offense was prior to the Fourth Quarter. With the bye week approaching, this will give Mike Sullivan the time he needs to incorporate his own game plans in with Glen Thomas assisting him in this regard. Matt Canada however will remain the Steelers Offensive Coordinator. However.. it will be in name only.



We will have to see exiting the bye week. However, I wouldn't be too surprised if there will be reports within the coming days on how Sullivan played a hand in it. The audible was Pickett's decision alone of course but Sullivan may have been the key to overriding Matt Canada's rule of not doing so given how Pickett wasn't able to the entire season up to that point.

Should the Steelers have this exiting the bye against the Rams... that should at least give all of us some form of confirmation that something has been switched up Coaching wise on the Offensive Side of the ball.

 

I have no inside information. All I know is that no OC that I know would ever act like that on a game-winning play that they were a part of. Something is up. We may hear more about it this week if the media brings that up to Tomlin. They wouldn't be doing their jobs if they didn't.

 

I said to my son, "Win the battle lose the war". Never so torn, we came back and watched the 2nd half on tape and you could feel the Ravens making mistakes let us hang around. Great win, but still fire Canada please. I feel like we won despite him, again!!

Even when we win we lose. It was no guarantee cheap skate Rooney would have fired him mid season anyway so I’ll take the W.

They won't and if they do, Tomlin never throws his guy under the bus, no chance. Finally, a non back shoulder throw to PIckens, must have been a mistake. LOL

 

And at least 30 of those games were with a supposed HOF?

All Tomlin would have to do is have Sully more involved with the play calling while decreasing Canada's role significantly. That said, given Tomlin's penchant for loyalty... you could be right. Just have to wait and see.

 

Something is definitely not adding up with that reaction...We all can read different things into it, but again for as bad as the offense was for most of this game, that play alone should of had him jubilant!!

 

When I first saw Canada’s reaction I thought that he was relieved to have another 2 weeks. After seeing it again he looks like they forgot mustard on his cheeseburger. The entire coaching staff is cheering and he is not enjoying anything.

Yea. He was far more animated earlier in the game after failed 3rd dahn conversions. There was clear frustration on his face. I think yinz are onto something here.
