I was hoping the Texans would get flagged some more, I wanted to see how many different ways they could score the same touchdown.

Nah. It's not the defense. When the defense holds their opponent to less than 20 pts, they win. But you can't expect them to hold every team, every week to under 20 pts. At some point you need the offense to win a game or two during the season. Hasn't happened in a looong time.

He might possibly be back after the bye but I expect he will not be the same

Next year if I’m reading it right he has a cap hit of $22m and dead cap of $6m

The way we constantly get gashed against the run, to have not given Fehoko a chance on the line is down right pathetic..Obviously what we are doing is not working, then add the injuries into the equation is just dumb coaching in my opinion.

Agree Robinson should be getting more snaps.. Nobody on this defense should be untouchable as bad as they have played..Still need a downhill thumper that brings some nasty..

This is what I have been trying to say all along. I always supported a Tomlin but last year and this year so far have really opened up my eyes.

I hate his defensive scheme. He has completely sold out to rushing the QB. That has been obvious this year and last year. We have never truly priories the corner back position. It has always been about playing zone and prevent defense on the back end to prevent the big pass play and putting pressure on the QB. Forget about the run. Play that in your way to the QB.

thus exactly why Heyward numbers improved on the latter part of his career. It wasn’t because he got better. It was because they were asking him to do things differently. Before it was gap contain and occupying blockers and playing laterally. Now they ask the defensive lineman to gap penetrate and to shoot the gap. The problem with this is with zone gap blocking the offense can somewhat scheme against gap penetrating defensive lineman and essentially let them run themselves out if the play, in addition it frees up the offensive lineman to get to the second level to block the linebackers and defensive backs.

thus is why you see massive run plays against our defense over the last five years. Not only that but we don’t prioritize size now on the defensive front so you see offenses get three and five yard pushes against us all the time. On top of this are cornerbacks are both inificuent at tackling and very slow. As a result they have to play off in zone so it just gives team an opportunity to throw quick short passes against us to avoid the rush. Then they do play action because we can’t stop the run and hit big chunk pass plays against us.

Watt and Heyward cover up a lot if inifficiencies with the defensive scheme. When one of them are hurt or isn’t playing well the defensive scheme is completely exposed.

This is all on Tomlin. Austin is only DC in name only. This is Tomlins defense. We will never get a good DC because Tomlins ego won’t allow that to happen.

I always have to laugh at the National Pundits saying how the Steelers have an elite defense. We are living off reputation only. We have not had a good defense for a while.

I’m tired of poor schemes putting all the pressure on players to perform. Sure execution is important but asking players to be Superman is a little unreasonable. Tomlins defense is reduculous in its expectation on middle linebackers. They expect these guys to be big enough to take on guards and fast enough to cover slot wide recievers. That’s why only one mlb literally wa productive in Tomlins system whom was a freak. My question is if a normal professional mlb player is not productive in the scheme then maybe it’s advisable to look at the scheme and change it so guys can be more productive within the scheme. But we don’t do that so as a result the players look bad when instead hood coaches put their players in position to succeed.

The offensive issues are well documented and yes Canada has to go but ultimately this too falls on Tomlin for enabling this to get to this point. His unwillingness to change on both sides of the ball both with scheme and promoting other players is maddening. The effect it has on players moral is obvious.

Time to trade Tomlin to AZ and go out and find a young offensive minded Head Coach who will hire a top line Defensive Coordinator. I’m sure it would be easy to find a legit DC for the Steelers based on the history of the team.

What’s maddening with this team for all the money we invested in the defense we still have glaring holes on that side, more so than on offense. I still fill like we need another CB, another SS, and another DT.
If we’re gonna continue with Tomlins horrible defensive scheme and sellout to putting pressure on the QB then at least get cb’s to play man coverage on the outside. That at least plays into supporting the pass rush and taking the quick passing game away.

The problem of course with man defense is the added pressure it puts on the Safeties and Middle Linebackers to cover the screen pass and to tackle the running QB.

ultimately to me the defensive line needs to be totally redone. There are literally only two players I would keep. Heyward and Benton. The rest are two small. None of them can handle double teams and play gap contain or keep the oline from getting to the second level. Ogunjobi is not a good fit unless you want him to gap penetrate and occasionally have a tlf. Adam’s is smaller than Ogunjobi yet we have him playing nose. I just don’t get it.

Chris Hoke said everything I’m saying. He said when Lebaue left we no longer prioritized stopping the run and we designed our defense around the Tony Dungy defenses similar to what he ran in Indianapolis. Those defenses were horrible against the run. The difference is they had Manning on the offensive side. The Indy offense as a result forced other teams opposing offenses into being one dimensional we don’t have that kind of offense.

The bigger issue is the scheme and lack of big DT’s OCCUPYING the Olineman. When are we gonna stop hoping for Superman at MLB? The s heme is flawed and puts way too much stress on the mlb position. But we refuse to change and keep thinking it is a personell issue as opposed to a scheme issue.

get bigger defensive lineman and have them gap contain and play laterally and tie up blockers as opposed to getting small quick defensive lineman who are gap penetrators.

Defense definitely has its share of problems but it is not worse than the offense. The offense is comically bad.

The defense has had these issues for years. As Ray stated, they thrive on splash plays and pressuring the QB. Take that away and they suffer greatly.

Tomlin does not value big DT’s that can take up multiple blockers and stop the run. He values smallish quick gap penetrating defensive lineman that feast and famine. Sometimes they make great plays and a tfl or sack and when they penetrate the wrong gap they take themselves out of the play and give up big chunk plays.

Tomlin has been enamored with Warren Sapp ever since he coached at Tampa. He has desired to acquire that type of Defensive Lineman ever since. Sapp was not only quick though he was powerful. Those are rare guys to find.

Regardless this team is not built to stop the run or protect the mlb. We will never have another good mlb unless they are an absolute freak that transcends above the scheme like Shazier or they change the scheme.

The sacks and turnovers are nice when they happen but you can not build a defense predicated on that and expect it to be sustainable. Especially with an offense that can’t build a lead and force the opposing team to play catch up and thus pass the ball.

This defense is not built to stop the run at all. When we fall behind on the scoreboard it totally neutralizes our pass rush because the other team simply runs the ball.

I wanted them to settle for a field goal so I had to eat crow in my own living room after screaming "just give em the f**king touchdown" during the replay.

He's not gonna turn away from last big pay day. He's due $16 million more $ next year. He's not gonna turn that down regardless how many weeks he's not playing and Tomlin will rush to defend him, just like he did with Tuitt. That worked out really well. Tomlin lectured reporters for even asking about his status. How dare they.

Yep. The Steelers currently have $249MM on the books for next year, which would be ~$25MM above this year's salary cap, but if you project the cap rising the same as it did this year (7.9%) it would hover around $242MM.

The team doesn't have many big names hitting the market in the offseason, so they shouldn't be too pressed should Heyward decide to play. They've got some contracts they can restructure (Fitz), and/or drop (Robinson), or they could even add a couple of void years onto Heyward if they really wanted to to free up some chunks. But that's usually last resort, and I don't think they're in that kind of a spot.
