I’d need to go back and rewatch (and probably won’t have time), but I wonder how much of that preseason success was vs. man coverage. Just thinking back at the biggest deep passes to Pickens and DJ, I’m 90% sure those were vs man coverage on the outside. The blueprint is out there for defensive coordinators.

    I expected a sophomore slump.
Right now, I think he is pressing in a bad offense.
I never figured him to be a Manning but I did think he would do well.

What are his strenghts? He operates very well behind play-action when you can run the ball.
Right now, defenses are just pinning the ears back and pressuring.
He is mobile enough to keep defenses honest in that scenario as well.
I still like his reads in a normal offense against a defense that is respecting the offense.

But my guess is that Canada will destroy this QB.
I guess the good news is that they'll have a good draft position.

Brock Purdy is a perfect example of good coaching in a legit offense.

I just went back and had a quick look. The Pickens TD and passes to Pickens and DJ were definitely man, the Freiermuth TD looked more like zone to me.

It's also notable how he steps into the pocket more in these games, rather than trying to escape to the outside.

    I've been told a QB can't throw a receiver open, it's impossible.
    You better double check.

Sorry Amp. I didn’t see your post before I posted mine.

We keep talking about the same things all the time. My question is where do the Rooney’s fit into the equation. When are they going to step up to the plate and have some accountability for there non- actions so far.

So is the head coach. Add the defensive coordinator. Oh right, that's the head coach...

    ROONEY DOES NOT CARE

broken record or not, I have said this for 5 years

actions matter more than words, we are what we are - a mediocre organization at this point, with a cheerleader HC that the National Media loves.

We all know he has the ability. You don't get drafted in the NFL if you can't decipher a zone defence. He is struggling badly, but why? We don't have the luxury of seeing any of the stuff behind closed doors so we'll never really know all the reasons, but maybe what's going on is fixable. Putting pads on the players isn't going to fix this though

They need to find a way to make things easier for Pickett.

Actually we don’t know that. The proof as they say is in the pudding. He showed his inability last season and it has continued through this season. As for the Steelers drafting him very few draftees are 100% nfl ready. The Steelers clearly wanted him to sit last year and develop unfortunately that plan didn’t work out.

I agree, unfortunately. Unless a very competent OC is brought in soon, I believe Pickett's career is already over. Not many QB's start their careers the way KP has and turn it around. So much development happens in the first couple years. Bad habits are hard to break. Lack of confidence is crippling. Pickett needs a good OC with a focus on X's and O's to help him out. He can't do it himself at this point. A new OC literally needs to focus on helping Pickett build up confidence. Strong running game, play action, roll out, screens, quick throws, use the whole field, etc.

If our idiot HC won't make a chance and our absent owner won't make a change, I have little confidence that Pickett will be a long term starter in this league

mikeyg reads minds now. I think you would find a better way to apply such an amazing gift.

Putting something in all caps does not make it true, just as the owner making decisions you don't agree with doesn't mean he does not care.

I keep thinking of Shane Falco talking about quicksand in The Replacements. I think that's what is happening to Pickett.

Yeah seems like it. I'm not convinced Pickett is a legit NFL starter under any coach, but I do think to have any chance at success we need to make a change. A guy like Peyton Manning was always going to be good, but other players with lesser natural ability need things around them to come together.

If Purdy doesn't go to SF, is he starting? If Brady doesn't go to NE, does he end up a HOF'er? Hell, does he even end up being a good starter? Most will say yes to Brady, but I don't think it's guaranteed. QB's are such fragile creatures. They need the skill, but they also need opportunity and some luck to have weapons around them, a good Oline and a coaching staff that helps them succeed early in their careers.

Attention to detail, padded practices and whatever else Tomlin said, isn't going to help Pickett. Dude needs a full blown life line and I don't think our coaches can or will give it to him

Jury still out on Pickett but is it possible this is the worse QB threesome the Steelers have had in 55 years??

Big(stin)K is playing like hot garbage. There's no disputing that.

But there is not just one issue. The issues of garbage HC, garbage OC and garbage Big(stin)K are all mutually exclusive and all 3 exist.

Even if you fixed any one or two of the issues, the 3rd one will persist.

All 3 have to be changed/fixed.

News Flash : all above may be true not sure he lost the locker room but he will be extended if he wants that’s a fact. Not having a losing season is hard to do and impressive but ? Is it the smart thing to do? Hiring from within is great but it’s not working they clearly need to pivot from that strategy

JMO, but I don't believe in ruining a player. You either have it , or You don't. What We seen last year was a team that was winning by running the ball , and asking their Qb to make a few plays, and not mess it up. This year every team that knew they were facing us watch those games, and said .....No.....oif You want to beat us Your Qb will have to do it, and He hasn't. I don't want it to be that way. I had high hopes for KFP, but I will tell You what will probably happen. We will get a new OC, and KFP will look a little bit better, or He will be the same , and people will say....see He was ruined.
It's sad, but a fact many many many players just aren't good NFL players just because they are good in college.....just like they aren't good college players just because they were good in HS, and so on.
Go back to any great players You know....no matter what system they where in they eventually shined....even when the team was bad around them .....they look , and show something. I'm not saying KFP can't get better....I'm say how much better.

Well, I can't speak to the years before Noll (nor does anyone care to) but since the 80's until now?

The 80's had some dire QB conditions. Cliff Stoudt, Mark Malone years were pretty dire; that lasted 5 years. Then 3 years of Bubby, pretty darn bad but not recognized as such, just basically not recognized at all. Then 5 years of O'Donnell, not great, but not pure trash.

Then, 6 years of Tomczak and Kordell. Those were some strong Cowher teams that concealed how bad the QB units were. Some think Kordell wasn't that bad, but they are mis-remembering in my opinion. Kordell single-handily lost that playoff game vs. Denver.

Then we had one good Maddox year and one bad one.

I'm gonna go ahead and agree that since the 80's, this is about as bad as a QB situation that we have seen.

Definitely should change that nickname. We all know how "BigK" worked out for Kmart.
