If you watch the play the guy coming through on the right is falling down and even before that the receiver at the top of the screen was breaking into a sort of post coming open, he could have stepped up and slightly to the left and threw the ball. I actually think he gets panic feet when guys get behind him on the edge. I think he thought the far right guy was gonna get around and come up and get him. He has to learn to trust his line better which I readily admit is tough since they break down so much. He's anticipating it and bailing.

That last part is what I've been saying. The protection hasn't been good. It had been even worse yesterday, so counting on Pickett trusting his protection makes no sense.

Well Scribe I think a QB has to learn/adapt from play to play because its not gonna be perfect, it will break down that's what separates the good/great QB's from the rest. I hope he gains it or we will be in trouble and will have to make a big decision. We will not obtain a good evaluation until the line is playing well but he no doubt is too jittery.

On the positive side we’ll get to see what other QBs can do in the same system. I’m not expecting a whole lot. When your line can’t block for the run or pass and your receivers are getting little separation, the QB play is mostly irrelevant.

It's painfully rare the receivers obtain good separation, usually contested catches but the tape analysis of KP earlier this year showed receivers getting separation but not necessarily right away so by that time KP felt pressure and bailed (sometimes it really wasn't there but most of the time it was). Its a dumpster fire right now. If he is hobbled with a sprain he is gonna be even more Happy Feet back there.

Defenses are predominantly playing zone against Pickett. He has to know where the soft spots are and anticipate. He’s not doing it at all. Not sure how he made it through 5 years of college ball without being able to figure out zone defenses, but he hasn’t.

Agreed, you would think that is fixable or that is a huge miss when evaluating a potential number 1 draft pick!!!

Ya, it's never a perfect pocket. Unfortunately, Pickett seems to have no pocket presence to be able to learn/adapt.

He's played 18 games in the NFL now and his pocket presence is getting worst instead of improving. The game is being played faster than Pickett can process.

I may start calling him Spinner.

There is a certain someone here who was the first to say it, been saying it all along, Pickett bails on the pocket too soon.

It is looking like that might be the case. That would really really suck because that will put us behind years. You can't afford to miss on #1 draft picks here because the Steelers being who we are and love they don't make radical changes or trades. This could be Mark Malone years except the only thing that perhaps prevents that is the fact after the rookie contract players want money and us being tight we will be forced to move on. I hope he can turn it around and maybe a new OC and QB coach can correct what he is not seeing. My gut is beginning to tell me though he is who we are seeing.

I hear you... He is who we are seeing.

Ben was the last vestige of Cowher's team that Tomlin had been hiding behind. Now it's all on Tomlin, and I'm willing to bet, Tomlin will not come back next year so he can't get blamed for not having a clue.

The next HC will inherit a really horrible team, and have a losing season in his first year, and everyone will praise Tomlin even more.

Gonna have to break some eggs to make an omelette! Might get Jets ugly for a bit. We are gonna need a Noll draft to fix this **** show!!

That, or things have gone wrong so often, the plan is so bad and the protection is so unreliable, that it is all in his head.

That was not clean. Would you rather him stay and get tripped up or taken down right away?

    Fun with punctuation:

FWIW, Kenny Pickett twice walked thru the Steelers locker room over the past 45 min, in sandals and nothing at all on. His knee? No limp or any encumbered labored walk. Headed to meetings with teammates.

Hey, it's a gloomy Monday after yesterday's debacle. Thought I'd lighten the mood a little. :roflmao:

The defender is falling so a slight move to the left (not a spinning rollout) would have created a clean pocket for Kenny. That's what made Brady and Marino so exceptional. They both had limited mobility but they knew how to move around in the pocket to create the necessary space to deliver the football. Kenny bails way too quick.

Falling into the pocket. So either Kenny is tripped or the guy latches onto his foot.

96 fell into the pocket. If Kenny moved slighty to his left (to being at the back of Jones), 2 possibilities happen
    1. Jones steps on him and create a bad throw.
    2. You only have a split second before 96 grabs Kenny feet.

If you go watch that pay that guy is falling down and there was room to step slightly to his left and up. It was hard to stop it exactly at the right point but he could have.. His first instinct is to roll out. Not saying it was a perfect pocket but he could have slid a bit left and stepped up. There are now several a few articles showing the same thing with the whole play on video to watch.
