How does Kenny miss Connor Heyward in the back of the endzone?

I still don't understand what happened. Trips to the left and both Defenders screw up and both go after Robinson leaving Connor Heyward running all alone in the back of the endzone. Slam dunk, Easy Peasy TD; RIGHT!!! You can't ask for anything easier than that.

Any High School QB out there could have made the play to Conner Heyward. Any one on this message board could have made the pass to Connor Heyward in the back of the endzone.

You can't blame Canada for calling this play that completely screwed up the defense, you can't blame Tomlin for the ball going to Robinson; the only player that was covered.

How can Kenny not throw the ball to Connor Heyward in the end zone? There is no reason to even think about a career in the NFL if Kenny can't hit a wide open receiver 10 yards in front of his face.

A million times yes. I didn't even have to see the replay to see how open he was while watching it live.

Seeing shadows. Last year was house money for him. He was a rookie and wasn't expected to ball out. This year he's worried about stinking and he's just not playing and seeing things. He want's to spin out of every pocket and make a play, but he's dropping his eyes and looking short.

Yes. He's absolutely forcing every play and playing scared. They need to roll him out more often, like last week, and hit some easy throws and allow him to get more comfortable in the pocket.

Yeah, I think awful coaching, HC, OC, others has already put a big dent on the NFL career of Kenny Pickett. The damage may be irreversible, but Rooney has to try, and though Tomlin should be gone, he'll hang around so AT LEAST mandate Canada firing and bring in someone from outside to get up to speed over the next few weeks, while one of the positional coaches is temporary OC.

Also mandate that the WRs and RBs and TEs be interviewed, in private, to get a feel for what isn't being tried that could work.

Next, watch REAL NFL offenses and STEAL several plays from each of them.

In fact, we may want a nerd with super programming skills be the OC (no football experience required). Use AI to scrip the game plan after programming in data from 30 stolen plays.

It's absolutely asinine that they can't see that the motion isn't doing anything but confirming to defenses what they're seeing. Not once have they had the TE cross the formation to the backside of the play have they succeeded. Pat is not blocking crap right now. Don't know what's gotten into him, but he's checked out in all departments on a Claypool level of effort at times. I mean They can get Gentry back off the Bengals PS and he'd do better.

I have to add I think that was after he had his helmet ripped off with no penalty. They don't enforce these rules evenly.

We send 4 receivers out but Kenny only seems to progress to the second. Might as well send out 2 receivers and keep the rest in max protect!

I also noted that. The refs seemed to have a “let them play” attitude on the whole which seemed to surprise a few players. Lots of helmets on the floor.

He rushed his decision on the play. He wlhad already decided to throw to Robinson before Heyward came open.

have they checked him for glasses? charles johnson ended up with them back in the day after they checked his eyes. of course it was canada's fault for kenny missing that and heyward being open. :smiley1::cool:

No, but the consistent lack of protection from the offensive line played a role. He didn't miss Heyward. He had already decided to throw to Robinson before Heyward came open. He didn't anticipate the busted coverage. (Two defenders went with Robinson, leaving Heyward open.)

I think Pickett just doesn’t have that “it” factor many talk about. What I mean by IT factor isnt physical traits it’s the ability to process mental things fast and act quickly. Right now he looks like a mouse on a wheel.

yes he did miss heyward. he focuses in on one guy at a time. yes the line is a problem and so is kenny's recognition of what's happening in front of him. he runs into pressure, he doesn't see the big picture of what's evolving in front of him. it's not just him i assure you, but he is part of the problem. this team has many issues across the board.

Some people are cool under pressure and lights. Others cannot think and process information and mind freezes up. The later tend to be busts as nfl qb. Kenny is one of them.

To be fair all he sees is the guy coming up the middle again. He bails right into the rush, but he doesn’t know Isaac is going to push him down.

he’s got to stop spinning out when he bails. Had he kept his eyes downfield and moved right, he sees Conner wide open!

Yup! The one time it was a D line for Houston though, was actually because he went H2H with Isaac. That line was doing a lot of hands to the face. Only time they didn’t was when they were getting the run game going.

because, and I am coming around to this - he is just not that good. Canada flat out SUCKS and Kenny just may be average or worse. But not better.

    1. Crap happens
    2. I've seen Tom Brady, ben, etc miss easy stuff before..... are you one to watching football? Or just wanting to find something to hate Kenny for?
    3. 70% of play calling is idiotic.

I'm not saying he didn't make a mistake, but it's not missing a player if the guy doesn't come open until after Pickett has already decided to throw to someone else. He rushed that decision because he's not trusting his protection. He's not trusting his protection because it sucks far too often. Pickett isn't adjusting to the problem like he should and that play was a perfect example.

He hasn’t been seeing the open receivers all season and it got him injured yesterday. Had Connor and if he didn’t bail early he would have gotten to Pickens coming open.

The guy is lost. Maybe sitting while he recovers will do him some good.

Sure, anyone could have made the pass to Heyward if they knew he was going to be uncovered. The problem is that Pickett didn't have time to see him uncover.

You have to remember that Pickett was releasing the ball as the break was happening. He can't know the corner that was supposed to cover the back WR in the endzone would make a mistake and run to cover the short route. That was just one of those bang-bang things that can happen. I don't think he did anything wrong on that play. Crap happens sometimes.

KP is still young and learning so I can blame, or at least partially blame, coaching for his being drafted as a #1 and what the coaches are doing in his development that may not have been what it should have been. Every week this kid is increasingly under the microscope as many were touting him being the next "franchise" QB because of how he did in practice games before the season started and now leading an offense that is as anemic as it is. There is no cure for this, def of insanity, so we'll need to ride this storm out and either improve or continue on as is. JMO>
