Watson’s remaining cap hits (all fully guaranteed)
    ‘23 - $19 million
    ‘24 - $64 million
    ‘25 - $64 million
    ‘26 - $64 million
‘27 - $9 million (not under contract, but dead money from restructuring)

    Pickett:
    ‘23 - $3.2 million
    ‘24 - $3.8 million
    ‘25 - $4.5 million
‘26 - Steelers have 5th year option - dollars TBD

Additionally, Watson cost the Browns ‘22 13th overall pick, ‘23 12th overall pick, ‘24 1st rounder, plus 3 mid round picks.

Pickett cost the Steelers the ‘22 20th overall pick.

If both guys were mistakes, at least the Steelers have a mistake that’s not franchise crippling.

I still have some hope for Pickett, though last night put a big dent in it.

I would be very surprised if Watson ends up working out for the Browns. He is just too inconsistent. He still makes the occasional great play, but he misses too many throws and doesn’t take care of the ball.

I think a young me could have done what Pickett did last night and I'd only want a couple thousand for that performance:)

Very worrying opening two games from Kenny, he can and probably will improve but he looks nervy and unsure of himself right now.

Is there any modern day precedent where a QB is this bad and turns it around to become a franchise guy?

The scheme and protection is a huge issue but he is still missing far too many throws

I never thought he was worth the hype in Houston.

Plenty of quarterbacks started their careers poorly and turned it around. The only place I can look for encouragement is his college career. Pickett took a while to get it together at that level, too.

He was fantastic in Houston. If that player showed up, the Browns might have gotten a good return on their investment. Happily, that isn't the case. I'm enjoying watching Watson fail. More importantly, Browns dirtbag owner Jimmy Haslem went all in on Watson and it is blowing up in his face. That is karma.

I mean Josh Allen had to re-invent his throwing motion over an off-season

if watson didn't commit two face mask penalties that set them back, this would have been a different game. just sayin.

I agree, when most players lose "IT", they never get it back.

I wouldn't say he was fantastic. He had a losing record there.

Plus a P6 and a fumble scoop and score. Nice night for this franchise QB they have. Man, it's refreshing to see Cleveland continue to suck in multiple ways. JMO>

Teams win games. Quarterbacks can't do it by themselves.

I disagree, a franchise QB, a real franchise QB, not one that is paid like one, can carry a team. A legit franchise QB can make a mediocre team perennial contenders!

Nope. Those penalties were forced by the Defense. They didn't happen in a vacuum. They weren't just "mistakes." They happened because he was under serious duress. The Steeler D CAUSED those penalties.

RG3 was talking about Pickett vs Watson this morning. He said no one expects much from Kenny Pickett but the entire Browns franchise was placed on Watson's shoulders. Watson since his return last year is the 26th ranked QB in the league. Not exactly worth the 230 million and a boat load of draft picks forfeited.

It is too soon to give up on Pickett. Two years in, many were calling Tua a bust but he is playing well now. His coordination isn’t helping matters as we know.

Didn't want to start a new thread so I'll ask in here.

Why was Watson called for face masking?
I feel like I see running backs and receivers stiff arm using the defenders facemask all the time.

I cannot stress enough how absolutely devastating Watsons contract is going to be if he doesn't work out. It was a disaster from the get-go and the Clowns restructuring made it doubly bad. Years 3, 4, and 5 are going to be absolutely brutal. The best case scenario would be for Watson to return to how he played in Houston and for Cleveland to then give him a 5 year extension, but that's looking less likely by the week.

Worst case scenario, if this IS the new DeShaun Watson, the Browns are stuck with him for almost 4 more full seasons and there's NO moving off of him. If they wanted to move on and cut or trade him in years 3 or 4, the cap hit would be so apocalyptic that they legitimately wouldn't have enough cap space to field a 53 man roster. Moving on from him this offseason would mean nearly $200M in dead money. At the end of the 2024 season, that would drop to $136M. At the end of 2025, $73M.

Essentially, the Browns will be stuck with a back up caliber QB eating up 25% of their cap space until 2026.

And now that Chubb is out, the worst case scenario is looking more and more likely.

The funny thing was watching ignorant fans and media types this spring celebrate his restructuring as some kind of front office genius, when it was actually doubling down on stupidity.

I am going to just sit back and enjoy the disaster.

Agree, I am actually at loss as to why he seemingly has regressed from the 2nd half of last year. I throw preseason in the garbage because we played crappy teams not playing full season personnel and schemes. I don't know if he is hearing footsteps and then the all to common breakdown on the line allowing rushers through is rattling him, not sure why. The one great pocket he had last night he threw to Austin I think and it fell 5 yards short as he and Austin were not on the same page (at least I think it was Austin down the left side).

Awww… you’re almost making me feel bad for the Brownies. Almost. Ok, not really almost. The restructuring had an all-in for 2023 feel to it. I bet they do it again next offseason to build a roster to try again in 2024, and kick the can of dynamite down the road.
