Again, my observation was about the game at HALFTIME.

The comebacks last season were 100% because of the offense. Vikings have had a terrible defense that relies on Cousins and his WRs to make big plays late game.

Flores is the DC because the last guy sucked.

Truth! But don't ask a run of the mill fan this because stats are all that count (according to them lmao).

Anyways, done with that BS! You are absolutely right with the scheme being the heart of the issue (on both sides of the ball). More specifically (one problem on defense), the primary and secondary contain defenders (which can change from call to call in most defenses) are non existent! For those confused about what "contain" is; every defense in football has players who are responsible for "setting the edge" (contain) which keeps ball carriers from just running outside and getting to the sideline while forcing them inside to the defensive help! Many of the times, it's the end man on LOS but it can be anybody. Teams that play solid defense though, make sure that usually someone who has a proper angle and are in proximity to that side of the field, are the contain player!

EX: TJ Watt is a rush end/OLB. Let's say he's playing on the "weak side' (no TE or less receivers to this side). If he's in a 2 point stance (no hand on the ground), he's probably going to line up in a 9 technique (this would be on the TE's outside shoulder, if there was a TE on that side). Or he could even be wider outside. He is one of the best candidates to be a contain player but if he rushes the QB (blitzes), his "contain" spot would be filled by someone who would replace him (Safety, Corner or even another Backer). BUT!!!! Pass rushers still have an obligation called "Pass rush contain". So when they rush the QB, they (outside pass rushers) are to get on the outside shoulder of the QB while also not over running the QB (getting too deep in the backfield). This can allow ballcarriers to find seams underneath and get outside. But one of the worst things I have seen our defense doing is folding inside on a pass rush! This absolutely screws the entire defense and gives the ball carrier a direct path to the edges. So either guys are not properly running assignments to fill the contain spot when the original Edge player is rushing OR... it's just not coached up (at all). This is scary! Mcafferey (sp) is a great back but never should have gotten to the edges that easily. In the NFL, most defenders are almost as fast as the RBs but if you combine that with taking good angles, a good defense can stop the RB at or maybe 2-3 yards past the LOS! This is why a back averaging 4+ yards a carry is really good!

The other piece here is the "secondary contain". That would be the player that has to come up and force the ball inside (or make the tackle)if the original contain is breeched. Well, when you are running man coverage on the outsides (corners- who are quite often secondary contain to their sides), the receivers run off the corners and then stalk block them at least 10+ yards of the LOS. So now the back (ball carrier) has a full head of steam with blockers out past the edge! This is a scheme/technique issue! BIG trouble for any defense. If these were players strictly blowing assignments, you would expect to see players being pulled more often!

This is just ONE detail the Steelers have done a really poor job with IMO. Quite simply put, there needs to be a contain player for EVERY SINGLE PLAY! This is non-negotiable!

There are many more! Some on offense as well!

Anyone who has coached, played or just wants to talk/learn more about X's and O's just let me know!

How do you know how long it will take for the players to learn the system, Kwon Alexander wasn't with the team for OTAs, I'm also not going to make judgements on defense after one game .

If it's a recurring issue that key defenders are not maintaining their assignments or are unclear on their responsibilities, then coaching is absolutely a factor. This may require a scheme adjustment or even personnel changes. After all, football is as much about discipline and assignments as it is about physical skill and athleticism.

    Bottom Line
You're right in saying that a contain player is non-negotiable for every single play. Without this fundamental aspect, a defense, no matter how talented, runs the risk of being exposed. For a team like the Steelers, which has a tradition of strong defensive play, failures in this area are not just surprising but concerning. Whether it's a question of coaching, scheme, or individual player responsibility, it's an issue that needs immediate attention for the defense to perform at the level that's expected of them.

Speaking of offensive schemes, watching Alex Kozora on YouTube breaking down offensive plays. Same plays after plays it is unreal!
Nothing has changed. 2x2 wrs on each side running same routes over and over.
No wonder other teams are stating they run the same plays over and over and over and over.
    Its like groundhog day!

Alex needs to watch other teams....running the same plays more than once is nothing new today, yesterday, or tomorrow. Again this is the very exact same guy that two years ago blamed everything on Ben and said Canada system was great....Ben couldn't run it. Same Guy is now doing everything to blame Canada. He'll he even went so far as trying to say a guy was open on some of His breakdowns that year.....after the ball was out of Bens hand. You can't call a Guy open after the ball is released. LoL everyone else is always open after You release the ball.

Tomlins teams have been out schemed since our old dc left. It was embarrassing what patriots did to him in last afc championship game. San Fran coach toyed with him and our oc Canada has been in charge of most pathetic scoring offense in league. We ran Sam roads play 8 times Sunday for gods sake . It’s not like it was working. Fire whole staff and start over. We will be 0-2 afyer Monday

If you were to make a judgement on the D after one game, what would you say? That it really looks smashing? That after months and months of practice and preseason, it really looks top shelf? That after spending more than 1/2 of the NFL $ on the D, it seems like a top 5 D in the league?

OK, OK, you said you weren't going to make a judgement. But can I make a prediction for you? That when we face legit Super Bowl contenders - like SF this year, and Bills and Eagles last year - the D will appear pathetic and no where near top shelf. But when they face the creampuff teams - such as the Raiders, the Cards, the Texans, Colts - they will magically appear "not that bad" (just like last year when facing tomato cans)?

Not coincidentally, our "winning ways" were also achieved when we faced the cupcakes last year, building our "winning record" on the likes of the Saints, Colts, Falcons, Panthers, Raiders and Browns - all teams with losing records, just in case you didn't know.

Yes it does take some time ,but watching the weak spots on both sides which Teams do you think will fix those problems more quickly ? You can't just stick to the we do what we do approach, we must be masters of the game in todays game.. This means having the players to play multiple types of schemes and the knowledge to know when and how to force the issue on both sides of the ball..

IMO we are stuck in our approach and a lot of our players are limited to certain schemes and approaches..We try to hard to get a Franchise RB .ng up plys we make little to no effort to play to our players bet games we really do fall short in sett

Suck on a big rock, Rose-Colored Cathy. The win vs. Cinci was in 2022, this is 2023, Cathy. Were you really impressed with that D of last week? I bet you were. OH and by the way, that win vs, Cinci was against a rusty Burrows, just like he was vs. Browns last week. See any similarities? I thought not Cathy.

    Burrow just threw a terrible, Pickett-llike INT...LOL

Actually...it looked more like a Roethlisberger like INT vs Jaguars in '17 divisional round.

It shows how dumb you are you mentioned the losses in 2022 to the Bills and Eagles, but it's not okay for me to mention a win in 2022 , tell me you're a clown without telling me you're a clown.

You're defending THIS year's D by bringing up week 1 of last year; let's talk about graduating with honors in Clownsmanship, shall we? Of course you had to include the mentally deficient "go root for another team" rhetoric into your repertoire of the non-thinking; quite similar to a Browns' fan in mental misconfiguration and absurdity.

When all you got is a meme as your comeback, you might have just had your @ss kicked. Boom. Go ahead and cite last year's week 1 D vs. a rusty Burrows as evidence to how good Pgh's D is right now. That ought to work out super. You should feel proud of yourself for that one.
