Tomlin won immediately with talent that was already on the roster. His first 5 years Steelers made Playoffs 4 times and went to SB twice. I'm not sure but I know more then a few of the key players those first 5 years were drafted or gotten during Cowher's days as HC. After that GB Super Bowl loss we have been crap in the Playoffs when we make them. After those first 5 years the team had a lot of Tomlin era draft picks. Now, I do not know how much say Mike has in drafting but we sure have had some downers since the GB SB loss:(

They spend up to the salary cap limit nearly every year. The cost of your coordinators is peanuts in comparison. You could be right and maybe that’s part of it but it can’t be the only reason surely.

They seem to take a strange pride in not firing senior staff, and prefer to let contracts expire instead. No other team would still have Canada on staff at this stage.

Let me make it simple for you. Players win games.

Again, I know. My point is better players win games. Cowher drafted better players then Tomlin and Tomlin had the fortune to have some at the beginning of his HC position.

Steelers don’t pay coordinators I think Tomlin gets a cut if he keeps the pay low with coordinators

Mediocre Mike = Mediocre Coordinators = Mediocre Results. That's just the the reality of the situation.

Then again, should we really be blaming Tomlin for poor coaching hirings? It's the Rooneys who keep writing Mike his head coaching checks and inking his contract extensions.

Maybe a feckless ownership is the problem? I know that's a radical suggestion, but is it really? It just seems like to me that a culture of "we don't need to be great, this is good enough" has to start somewhere...and it usually starts at the top.

Has the drafting been that bad during Tomkins time? AB, Bell, Decastro, Pouncey, Heyward, Watt, Shazier, Tuitt, Hargrave and some other very good players like Highsmith and DJ were all drafted during Tomkins tenure and they got minkah in a trade.

MT has had a lot of talent to work with. Subpar QB play has been an issue since about 2019 though to be fair

Wow..if it were only that easy .Teams that are good should just get rid of their coaches...Let the players coach themselves

To be fair, they had much better luck drafting offense.. They've also had some bad luck on defense with Shazier and Tuitt. But if you take those two out of the equation they have missed on way more than they've hit.Not much if any in the rounds after the first. Almost all off the roster and out of football completely.

I agree that it sure seems that better players were drafted during Cower era and better coaches too. You can’t deny the success. Sure the Tomlin era has had some homeruns and busts.

But ya gotta include the GM too.

These threads are funny. Have you ever stopped to think that the reason the Steelers hire the coaches they do is due to having one the smallest budgets in the NFL when it comes to coaches? The Steelers have one of the lowest cumulative assistant coaches salaries in the NFL. That isn't on Tomlin, that is Rooney.

Not saying Tomlin does not have his share of the blame, the head coach always does. Tomlin operates within the confines of what is provided to him just like almost every other NFL coach. The GM drafts and signs players within a salary cap provided by the NFL and signs coaches within a budget provided by the owner.

Canada is probably still here mainly because he is owed money. Art II is a business man first, sports fan second.

It's embarrassing, Dobbs, Dobbs is putting up 28 pts. We are lucky to get two touchdowns.

Not a good start, it’s actually a bad start by getting embarrassed at home, even if it’s by a contender. We’re after all supposed to be a playoff team this year

but I’ll withhold judgement for a few weeks -

He did play well the first 3 quarters but he folded up like a cheap tent in the 4th quarter when the game got tight. There is a reason that in his 7th year in the league Dobbs still has never led a team to victory yet.

Yep, we've had tons of talent over the years, tons. Can't blame a lack of talent. It's been the coaching, IMO. We're a mess on both sides of the ball, and special teams have been a mess on and off for a decade as well.

We played a ton of man last year, and against an inexperienced QB with a weak arm but good accuracy, we played soft zone coverage. We just let him play catch with his receivers all game long. On offence, we don't even seem to have a plan. It's just a disaster.

Tomin is being paid $12.5M per season. He's the 5th highest paid coach in the league. https://sportsnaut.com/highest-paid-nfl-coach/

I don't think it's a matter of being cheap with coaches, or else, Tomlin wouldn't be 5th highest paid coach in the league.

The issue is that Tomlin wants to milk making $12.5M per season forever... his best approach is to have a team that keeps having "winning seasons" and a crap coaching staff so Tomlin can blame others, and do meaningless changes to cover his ass.

I do agree that Rooney is a business man first, sports fan second. So is Tomlin: Tomlin is a cover-his-ass man first, go for SB coach second.

    Were they wrong?

I remember when Cower hung it up, and lots of people were ready for some fresh air. He seemed to kinda phone in his last season. And I don’t want to hear the wife stuff.

You are correct sir. And there were also calls to fire Cowher in the early 90s because "he couldn't win it all".

Whoever our next coach is, he'll be unfavorably compared to Tomlin. That's just how we roll.

    Fire Tomlin!
    And fire his replacement too!

No, I suppose not. Noll had been around 18 years. He dragged competitive but somewhat talentless Steelers teams through the 80’s. But, yeah, he was tired, and the game had passed him by, as he admitted when he hung them up (if I remember correctly).

I’m not talking about Tomlin’s salary, I’m talking about the assistants. The Steelers have not kept up with the modern NFL when it comes to assistants salaries. Rooney is behind the times as usual, just like insisting on stronger defense and a star RB. Those were Rooney’s words a couple of years ago…the Steelers way.

Well this isn’t the 90’s. Here is hoping Kahn has more leeway to adapt to a modern NFL, it will just take some time.
