I had heard/read somewhere that "burgh" vs "burg" has to do with population - hence "Pittsburg" Kansas and California which have much smaller populations vs Pittsburgh PA with a larger population. I have no idea if this is true or not but I was the neighborhood champ at Trivial (good at guessing) Pursuit.

The "H" was in the original spelling of Pittsburgh to honor William Pitt and his Scottish roots. Scotland's towns such as Edinburgh have always used the H at the end of their name.

Can't argue with that plus he started that Jewelry Store and Brewery and dug that tunnel in the Burgh many years ago.
