We need to root for a jet loss tonight

Just in case the Colts lose out and we win out and lose the opportunity for a while card

If I'm not mistaken, as long as we win out, were in no matter what. Nevertheless, thats easier said than done.

If the steelers win out jets win out and colts lose out that will force a three way tie and jets and colts get in based on better afc record.

I just ran this through the Espn playoff machine- and with the Jets, Steelers, and Colts all at 9-7- and with the Ravens as division champ- the Colts were the team to lose out, not the Steelers. Under that scenario the Jets were incredibly the 5th seed, and the Steelers 6th seed, and the Colts out of the playoffs.

Under a scenario when the Ravens did not win the AFC North- losing last 2, Steelers winning the last 2- the Jets were the 6 seed, and the Colts were again out of the playoffs.

This all assumes the playoff machine is working correctly of course, but try it yourself.

so if the Jets and Steelers both end up with the same record, the Jets get in? that makes no sense since the Steelers beat them head to head. isnt that the first tie breaker?

Relax guys, it doesnt matter what the Jets do anymore, The 3way tie scenario with Pit/Indy/NYJ is not a worry now.

The Steelers will can only get to 9-7 by beating Cincy and Cle and will therefore will have 6 conf wins. Had they got to 9-7 by beating Dal and Cle or Cincy the would have had onlly 5 conf wins, and this would have made elimated Pit in the 3-way tie w/ Indy and NYJ.

As of now. if NYJ wins out and goes 9-7 they will have 7 conf wins, If Indy loses out they will be 9-7 with 6 conf wins as will be the Steelers.

In the 3-way tie case. Head to head goes out the window as it doesn't involve all the tied teams. So it goes to conf record.
The Jets will get the #5 Seed
Pit and Indy will still be tied. The will have the same record in common opponents so it goes to Strength of victory (how many games did the teams you beat win?). I looked at this this morning and if you look at all the games remaining to be played in the NFL, there is no combination of wins/losses that gives Indy a Strength of Victory advantage over Pitt. So Pitt will get the #6 Seed and Indy will be out.

Losing all those games to bad teams pays off after all.

Now, if Pitt had got to 9-7 by beating Dallas, they would have had only 5 conf wins, and Indy would have beaten them for the #6 seed.

According to every sports show and radio station I listened to today, we win the last 2 and we are in no matter what.

yes because the afc record would say colts 6.6 steelers 6-6 jets 7-5 but strenght of opp is for the steelers vs colts

One of the reasons I started to try to understand tiebreakers about 20 years ago, was becasuse sports news and sports talks guys generally didn't understand them, and frequently gave wrong, misleading or incomplete information. The damn things are confusing enough, without the confusing being given the stamp of validity by sports new organizations.

Hey, thanks for the explanation. Nice to know we can't get back-doored if we take care of business the last 2 weeks. Of course, for those of us in the 'playoffs no matter what' camp, a loss by the Jets is still helpful in the 8-8 'lose to Cleveland and still get in' scenario.

If the Steelers win in week 16, here's hoping for a move to a 4PM start in week 17 (though I'm pessimistic). it would be nice for our team to know exactly what they're playing for or if we NEED to have starters out there the whole time. I remember Roethlisberger getting injured against the Browns in a meaningless final game once. Just wondering what criteria they will use to move games around....something tells me they'd be more likely to move Ravens/Bengals to the late game....

These terrible Jets could jump over the Steelers for a Playoff spot? Gross.

I don't even want Sanchez as backup, so don't even start that thread. Their coach either. So tell a friend.

Some of these teams are losing in the same fashion, multiple turnovers.
