Let's hope Herbig doesn't pull a Ingram and complains about playing time, and then leaks it to the media he thinks he's better than Highsmith .

I think it becomes a legitimate discussion in 2025, Watt's contract year/Herbigs 3rd year, in deciding whether or not Herbig is ready to start or not. That makes Watt expendable thus potentially costing the team 9m in dead cap and saving them 21m in cap space. I think the Highsmith re-signing hints at this potential direction in a couple of seasons.

 

Yea a lot of potential there, TJ will be around 31, legend status but its still a business.

I would not worry about having three decent players for two positions. They may use Herbig as a swing between the left and right sides to keep Highsmith and Watt fresh while he hones his skills. And the injuries that are unfortunately part of the game may make this discussion moot.

 

You guys need to slow down with the anointing of Herbig, I mean he hasn't even played a regular season game yet, he looks like a good prospect but some fans want him to be a starter already .

How has Golden looked this year?

 

Very good in the preseason. We have capable backups if the preseason is anything to go by.

 

Hopefully we figure a way too have all 3 out there.

 

I cannot believe the Steelers have their two best defensive players locked up for a couple years going forward. This was a huge accomplishment and bodes well for the year. Herbig could be something special as well. I am trying to not get to excited about the preseason as our first real game is going to tell us a lot about this team. Hard not to get to excited though

 

They can do it if they want. They are going to want to get Golden snaps, too. He's a very good player and he also had a strong preseason.

I mentioned above that they used three outside linebackers together quite a bit when Highsmith was a rookie, playing him opposite Dupree with Watt moving around. I think they did a little of it with Ingram, Highsmith, and Watt, too. I think that was just a way to get their best players on the field and it helped cover for them being so weak at inside linebacker. That may be the difference. The inside linebacker group isn't as weak as it had been. I wonder if that is why we really haven't seen Herbig play inside in preseason, which was something they talked about possibly doing when they drafted him.

 

Let's worry about 2023, who gives a crap about the OLB rotation in 2025 .

It's certainly reasonable to get excited from watching Herbig these last three weeks, but at the end of the day, it's pre season. I do think he has earned some snaps during the regular season and see how that goes. As for being a full time player, I think he needs to add some pounds and muscle, and see if he can still keep his quickness. I'm hoping Austin and company come up with ways to have all three on the field at the same time. Also, we have to see if last season was a fluke for Highsmith or will it be the norm.
