I hope I don’t come across as a McFarland fan here, just curious what you consider “ample opportunity”.

I think the FO and coaches are more interested in his speed and ability in space. Not as a 3rd bellcow RB should the need arise. I suspect they would bring in someone else if that happened.

Personally, I was rooting for Master Teague.

They have allowed him three training camps. That seems like ample opportunity given how little he showed the last two seasons. Maybe he can make something of his opportunity to return kickoffs this weekend, though he hasn't been all that impressive in that role, either.

Steelers signed a WR from Rutgers, Aaron Cruikshank. Measurables are meh, at best, but he’s had some K/P return success. Seems like an odd addition at this point.

Speaking of WR’s, what’s the deal with Butler? Don’t think he saw the field on Saturday. Guess he hasn’t shown enough in camp.

I think the best Butler can hope for at this point is a long career in the XFL or USFL being top dog against lesser talented players. I'm sure someone else will give him a shot but he will be seeing more of the same no matter where he goes.

Cruikshank was a great return man in college and a productive WR but being only 170 lbs and running a 4.65 cost him from being drafted. If you're that small you better be like Austin and run a 4.25.

i'm reading more into it. could cruikshank be kept as the backup punt returner on the PS and gunner cut? austin will return punts but we keep this kid in reserve. the LB is to get our top 5 off the field for this last game with no injuries. i think they have most of the 53 set and will look for the PS keeps in this one.

There was a couple of plays in the TB game that showed the speed, and I honestly do not put anything on him for that goal line debacle in the Bills game. no lead and you expect McFarland to punch it in behind Green??? LOL He is likely the 3rd RB, seeing who else in on the roster and pre season results (not much), if the play is designed right he can perhaps be productive, but he has not shown is yet.

I'd like to see more of valladay. He's had a few more days to get acclimated. Had a nice catch and run.

The only reason I hold the goal-line failures against McFarland is because they demonstrate one more thing he can't do. Man, it is tough to hold on to a running back who can't pick up a blitz as a blocker and can't run in short-yardage situations.

I agree, if that back is primarily a return guy, or has proven he can be an effective receiver..blah blah. McFarland may have show a flash or 2 this preseason, but the intangibles are not that impressive.

Boykin has been pretty silent this preseason, but one Sp teams play showed his value, I'm not sure there is another guy with the instinct and fearless guts to go after it like him on the team. Locker room demeanor means a lot as well, just a guy who does his job. I think he sticks.

I get it. I have a lot of respect for players like that. I just wish he was a little better at being a WR than he is.

boykin has a role as a gunner on the punt unit. that is an important role. with the depth we have at wr, gunners role is deminished as a slot receiver. we have a couple of guys ahead of him in that role. we also have a guy ahead of him in the return role. he can't do what boykin does on specials. that leaves gunner well down on the list.
