Here's an interesting acoustic piece that transitioned from the the Jimmy Page Yardbirds era to Led Zeppelin not unlike Dazed and Confused. Also below is a later live version with Page on the electric.

"White Summer" was recorded by the Yardbirds 28–29 April 1967 at De Lane Lea Studios in London. Jimmy Page was the only band member to perform on the recording and was accompanied by Chris Karan on tabla[3] and an unidentified oboe player doubling the melody line.[1] The song combines elements of traditional Eastern as well as Western music.[1] In a 1977 interview, Page commented, "I used a special tuning for [the song]; the low string down to D, then A, D, G, A and D. It’s like a modal tuning, a sitar tuning, in fact".[4] He added that he called this tuning "'C.I.A.' tuning—Celtic-Indian-Arabic—because that's what it was ... D–A–D–G–A–D was something going around the folk scene during the 1960s"[1] and was used by Davy Graham for his "She Moved Through the Fair".[5]

"White Summer" was released on the Yardbirds' last album, Little Games. An alternate take/mix without the accompaniment was included on the 1992 Yardbirds compilation Cumular Limit. It was a staple of live Yardbird performances with Jim McCarty usually providing a drum part and appears on the albums Live Yardbirds: Featuring Jimmy Page and Glimpses 1963–1968. When playing the song live with the Yardbirds, Page used a 1961 Danelectro 3021 guitar

I was driving home and this song came on. I dug the hell out of it and it is the song that made this old white man get into Rap music. I golf with a black guy and he never believed I got into Rap music. One day after a round he came over my house and his jaw hit the floor. He looked at me wide eyed and then started going through my CD collection. He didn't even know half the Rappers

I have listened to them forever, before the change of music...which I love. I also seen them during the Heritage album...they opened for Mastodon, and Ghost opened for Opeth. IMO....Ghost was the only weakness of that concert.

You know I figured out how to play some of these buy ear on a standard tuned guitar, and way more complicated chords until someone told Me He was tuned differently. LoL.

 

Yeah, covers and mixes with a jazzy flare. I equated it to Apocolyptica ? or whoever did Mtallica stuff in a sense.

I felt the same way about Americana guitarist Leo Kottke and his mentor John Fahey until I found out about the custom tuning bit. Still amazed about the Jimmy Hendrix backwards/upside down thing. That's just plain trippy. Really enjoy this thread my Friend (even though I've never heard of 99% of what's posted).

 

Never really appreciated him or his music (too many girls swooned over him back in the 70's) until I was given tickets to see him live. Great performer and a classic gentleman on stage. This is one of my favorites of his and just heard it on the Margaritaville Sirius channel driving yesterday.
