Ask this question to non Steeler fans and I bet a ton of people would have Mike Tomlin in the top 5.

Tomlin was beating A. Reid so much that I heard MEDIA put it to question....What does Tomlin know that the rest of the league doesn't.

    Tomlin is 5-2 against Reid.

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/ReidAn0.htm

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/TomlMi0.htm

Reid has been a head coach for 8 more years but their career w/l % is pretty close. During his time with the Eagles though, it was considerably lower than Tomlin's but during his time with the Chiefs it has been considerably higher. As you said @S.T.D@S.T.D , Mahomes will do that for a guys career.

If I was starting a franchise and looking for future success, I would look to coaches that I think WILL have success and not coaches that HAVE had success. It also depends on whether or not this team has a high end QB or young talented QB on the roster. Lots of factors to marry a coach to a team. Either way, my best bet would be.

    1. Andy Reid
    2. Kyle Shannahan
    3. Nick Sirianni
    4. Zac Taylor
    5. John Harbaugh
    6. Sean McVay
    7. Doug Peterson

My next grouping has two distinct sides
    1. I am intrigued with Daboll and McDaniel but there isn't a large enough sample size yet (or enough success in that small sample size). Could be something here, might not be as well.
    2. old heads: Belichick, Tomlin, Payton, Carroll, are all coaches that have a lot of past accolades... but probably not the coach I am looking to hire for the next half decade to decade. They are safe, but I would be less than enthusiastic about their future success long term.

As a coach, I'd have to really think about Tomlin over Reid

However, as an evaluator of talent, I think Reid over Tomlin all day.

This is not an indication that I think Tomlin has final say over the Steeler roster, I don't think he has ever had that, he is 1/3 of the vote. It's just hard to look past Reid's ability to find talent.

Absolutely nuts to say Mike Tomlin is in the same Universe in terms of football IQ as Andy Reid. I know many of you are homers but wow Steelers Nation is losing their damn minds.

Come on man!!!! I know it's in parody but have some respect and put the 4 time SB winner ahead of the single winners;) Damn right Chuck Knox, damn good Pittsburgh boy. Can't remember and too lazy to look it up but I think Knox was Coach of the year a few times and I'm sure he is in Seahawks HOF.

After checking you are correct. When you Google Mike Tomlin against Andy Reed it gives you a 5-2 record for Tomlin but when you look at the date the article was written in was in 2017. That was before Mahomes came along so the true record of Tomlin vs Reid is 5-5.

Counting the playoffs Ben was 0-3 against Mahomes. Ben's stats against the Chiefs in those 3 games are pretty good, 86-139 926 yards 7 TD's and 1 int. But Mahomes stats against the Steelers defense in those 3 games are insane. 73-97, 988 yards, 14 TD's and only 1 pick. In Mahomes 3 games against the Steelers he has racked up 119 points for an average of 39.7 a game.

as in: they own us, just as TB12 did.

Tomlin nor Cowher have / had ANY answers....

in that playoff game 2 years ago, we beat them up in the first Q, but Tomlin and Ben played for FG's. Dropsy Johnson dropped a critical EASY CATCH on third down. We should have been up 21 - 0. We were not. We are weak.
