This makes absolutely no sense to me. We have a young guy in Highsmith coming off of a very productive season who has grown each year and has already proven he can be productive in our system. We have way bigger needs at Slot CB, ILB and Center depth and Defensive Line Depth. The only thing I can figure is they are doing this to posture against Highsmith in negotiations or perhaps Highsmith is being ridiculous in what he is asking for and they legit are considering alternatives.ONe thing is for sure... they are not going to have Watt, Highsmith and Young at the same time.

    Kendrell Bell.

doesn't sound like washington is willing to let him go for cheap. i hope we avoid if that's the case.

I agree they don't want to let him go for cheap. But 21 and 22 was nothing, and it's knee injuries. So i can't see them getting more than a third for him.

I am naive.... I never even thought about this being just a negotiating tactic that Khan was playing with.

Yeah, Washington doesn't 'need' to offload any players.
New ownership is an unknown, but I doubt they clean house of players.
They will probably work the Front Office first which makes the most sense, especially with the 23 season well underway as far as preparing.
So coaching staff and players appear safe for now.
Now IF the season starts off bad, I could see this ownership trading players for picks.
As much as I like Sam Howell, I'm not sure he's a Franchise QB. We only got to see 1 game from him and he did a pretty good job against Dallas.

But no, they are not going to 'unload' any players yet.

Did you notice Trubisky signed an extension immediately after Mason was signed

Or maybe they just bought a new pen

He was a second to begin with

He had a couple of good years so value goes up

He has bad knees do value drops a good bit

Third would seem to be max and the market value goes down each day

They got Highsmith in the fourth round, and he's a better player than Young, he would be on the bench because the Steelers already have their starters at OLB .

They should be extending Highsmith instead of wanting to pay Young over 5 million in 2023, Young is in the last year of his contract, he would get to play more snaps with Washington than Pittsburgh.

Given the trajectories of their careers, giving up Highsmith plus something more for Young would be idiotic, especially given that we know Highsmith can fit in that defense and we don't know that about Young.

Actually he would rotate and probably end up with almost equal snaps

You apparently do not know they can extend highsmight and still get Young.

You just need to start saying you don't like young, and leave it at that.

Yeah, there is absolutely no way we ADD to Highsmith to get Young. The return will be picks and Washington isn't going to like what they get. Young had a really good year 1 but has been injured since. Its a hard trade value to guess bc I think some teams view him as a rental (therefore low return) and other teams will be hard pressed to trade a high pick and then spend good money on a guy that has played a total of 12 games out of 34 the past 2 years. Washington's best hope is that a playoff contender has their top pass rusher go down for the season prior to the deadline and catch them a bit desperate. Otherwise, they are either looking at locking him up long term or getting rid of him for peanuts.

Washington is declining the option, so its a 1 year rental or a trade with the notion that we are signing him long term. I don't think we are good trade partners for Young. Either Young gets screwed by coming to Pittsburgh in a contract year stuck in a rotation with two guys that have outperformed him the past two years, Washington gets screwed by a low trade value return because he is coming as a rental, or we get screwed by bringing in a guy locked up long term that either doesn't return to form or causes a problem because he doesn't have ample opportunity to put up numbers in a rotation. None of it is good. The only way I see value in it is if we can't get Highsmith locked in and we view Chase as a cheaper alternative that can come in and take that vacated starting position. Would come with some risk, but might be worth it in that scenario (especially if he returns to Year 1 form or better).

Well Highsmith was a third rounder anyways, but that isn't the point. Theoretically as a one year rental Young would be great. Would Washington trade him for rental value (late round pick)? Would we want to sign him long term with Watt and (potentially) Highsmith already inked long-term? Would Young be happy signing long term as a 3rd pass rusher? Lots of questions to ask.

I started off the conversation saying a 3rd round pick is what Washington can get for young. And mentioned chances of having a third round pick is way worse than a coin flip for a player working out for us. So why not give that to them for young.

As for would Young be OK with that. Of course not. But he could prove himself, then get traded for higher pick and get paid more. But until then, that will be his role as a rotational piece for the year.

Can argue whether Young helps the team or not but if the Steelers feel he can then his contract isn’t an obstacle. You have a QB on a rookie deal, this is the time to splurge and get the players you think can put you over the hump.

Chase won’t tie their hands on signing Highsmith. I think Khan is a little smarter than that.

Yes, a third round pick is well below a coin flip odds of working out for us... but Young isn't a 100% chance of working out as a rental and I don't think he's the piece that wins the Super Bowl for us. Its not worth it for us to sign him as a rental unless its a chips in, Super Bowl or bust type of year for us (and I don't think we're there yet). In a vacuum its fine, but I don't think the payoff is there for us.

We just aren't the right partner for this trade. I think we should stay away.

He's a better chance than a 3rd rookie. And i don't see the demand there. He'll be paid as a rotation. Because that's what he'll be. Maybe incentives added on.
