Any player who thinks about gambling on their league and especially their teams are criminal and should be dealt with in that same manner.

Learn from Pete Rose. Still isn't in the baseball HOF.

Well... knew this news was coming. Not so much the second wave but the moment the NFL opened up betting as a whole. Did they not expect players to participate?! A major oversight on the league for not instituting more mandatory guidelines for all 32 NFL Teams early on.

Now, this does not make the players themselves innocent nor do I condone such behavior. All I am stating is that the NFL should have nipped this in the bud sooner if they did not want this to explode in the manner in which it did.

One of the reasons I liked the high salaries was that it made it really expensive to interfere with a game. I guess if you're betting millions there's some juice there.

The NFL generates a ton of revenue from betting apps. Addicts are going to be addicts, be they players or fans. It's like constantly dangling a bottle of MD 20/20 in front of a recovering wino.

Report: NFL expects to generate $270 million from gambling deals
Posted by Mike Florio on August 27, 2021, 10:57 AM EDT

The NFL has gone from hating gambling to loving it, because the NFL has found a way to turn gambling into an extremely viable revenue stream.

With more and more American states legalizing sports wagering, and with the NFL abandoning its past shunning of most things gambling, the league will be making plenty of money from its altered position.

Via the Washington Post, the league expects to generate roughly $270 million in revenue this year from sports betting and gambling deals. NFL executive V.P. and chief strategy and growth officer Christoper Halpin says that, eventually, gambling will become a 10-figure revenue stream. Annually.

“You can definitely see the market growing to $1 billion-plus of league opportunity over this decade,” Halpin told the Post.

I don't think any player is dumb enough to bet on their own team these days, a player from the Lions got suspended for placing a bet at the team facility, but that bet wasn't on the NFL.

It is rough to get a clear picture, but it looks like 34 states have some type of legal sports betting, CA and TX being the largest that do not, FL was legal through tribal law over the whole state, but was struck down by the courts. Those 3 states alone would possibly boost it dramatically. As to the OP, they have opened a box that will be hard to shut.

It sucks that in CA we can't gamble legally, it was on the ballot last year and it failed, betting the over on the Steelers wins the last few years would've been easy money.

Gambling addicts going to gamble. Betting on your own team isn't their biggest fear. It's an addict getting behind bigly and being offered an out by shaving a point here or there.
"You don't have to make your team lose, just keep the points under the spread." Which as anyone knows, eventually turns into "Yeah, your team needs to lose this game." What are you going to do, go to the cops? The league?

Two lions and one commander were suspended for NFL betting. I don’t think it was disclosed which games.

I think if they were to bet on their own teams, they would face at least a year long suspension or longer.

Wouldn't be surprised if the second wave included Las Vegas players. Disappointing for certain but not so much surprising!

Calvin Ridley was suspended for a whole season for gambling, I'm not sure if he bet on his own team though.

They are suspended indefinitely and were cut immediately. They might be able to apply in one year for reinstatement. Being fringe players, effectively they are done. Staff of the lions were also fired.

Yes. NFL players should not be associated with NFL FF at all IMO.

Hypothetically speaking. Let's say it's late in a season and some CB is going for a $100,000 FF championship payout and his professional team has already locked a seed in the playoffs but he needs the WR he's guarding against to have a TD for him to win his big pay off then who's to say he doesn't allow some separation to get that money? Call me cynical but I can easily see that happening.
