Not I. Only 3 things made sense. Trade Him, get rid of Him, or resign Him to lower the cap Hit. No backup Qb should be the 15th highest Qb cap Hit.

I’ve come to expect dumb decisions made for the “qb room” by the team. So not surprise by this signing.

Actually that’s not true… I was pleasantly surprised they didn’t draft a QB this year.

I'm not surprised by this signing at all, they weren't going to pay Trubisky 8 million to be a backup.

Mmm. It is good to have a reliable #2, but then there is the salary cap hit for Mitch and is he really worth that kind of money.

How much value does he add over Rudolph?

Maybe if we go a whole year without Kenny getting injured, management will rethink this expenditure.

The whole idea of a backup is to be able to have a chance to win games against average to below average teams while you wait for your starter to come back. If your starter is out for the year, then season is over anyway.

I`m ok with this move, but just for 1 year.

We feel good about KP maybe. See how he does year 2.

How could you really say we are Happy with Mitchell and Rudolph. I mean come on. This is nonsense

It's going to be an awkward room during OTA's. They want volunteers not hostages not sure what category someone with no options who didn't really want to be there falls into

Khan's move to bring in Mason and then force Mitch to lower his $10.6 million cap hit in 2023 is genius.

Once Mitch was scared the Steelers could actually cut him and save $8 million against the cap, it was time for him to return to the table and accept a new offer. I don't believe this extension happens without Mason sitting at the #3 spot.

They aren't getting crazy pay. Also, having a viable backup quarterback can absolutely help you win a Super Bowl. See what Charlie Batch did in 2005.

To me the room should be a lot better than last year.

Both Mitch and Mason have signed new contracts and now know for a fact that they will not be this teams #1 QB on the depth chart. Last year they both believed they could be the teams #1 QB on the depth chart.

Fair point. But do you need two viable back up QBs?

Hopefully Mitch proves his worth when KFP gets injured, and then Rudolph proves his worth when both Mitch and KFP get injured, and then we win the SB! I will gladly eat tons of crow at that point.

Could still trade Mitch to a needy team, if injuries happen, and we'd still have a serviceable backup QB.

They lowered his cap number for this season and locked in a decent backup for two more. How do so many of you not get that?

No, the hope is that we never see either guy play outside of preseason games, mop-up duty in blowout victories, and maybe a meaningless game late in the season as they rest their starters for the playoffs.

Actually 10,625 mill. If they released him it would have been a 8 mill savings. It was a smart deal extending him to keep the QB room stable. Plus bringing back the Deer. And still getting cap savings.

They had the option of not signing

Like all of us they had a life worth of options

They signed because it was the best opportunity for them

You are mixing up the cap hit and how much he was due to be paid this season. Of that $10.625 million cap hit, $2.625 million is part of his signing bonus. He received that money last year, but for cap purposes, it is spread out over the two years of the deal. His salary for 2023 was going to be $8 million. The new deal reduces his cap hit for this season and pays him at a lower rate the next two years than he was scheduled to get for 2023. The Steelers get a little cap relief from the deal and Trubisky gets a decent backup's pay for the life of his new contract, which works given that he probably isn't getting another shot as a starter.

To bring further clarity, we have the 1st Rd pick. The franchise and QB1 in KFP, and 2 guys who have been totally humbled by the rest of the league, because they realize that no one else wants them.....
No QB controversy and no waves whatsoever

All true but still awkward. It's like an epic walkout where you give the finger to all your coworkers and then have to show back up on Monday. :lolol:

I agree. For what they do and what they are paid, I would willingly take either one’s place as a “hostage”. MR tested the waters and Mitch’s agent also possibly did (for the unaware, agents are sometimes given the go ahead to set up a trade). Signing with the Steelers was probably the best financial option for both.
The GM satisfied the players, stabilized the QB room, and reduced the cap hit.
I can hold a clipboard with the best of them and would be glad to do it for half of what Reindeer makes.
