The SEC certainly doesn't seemed embarrassed by all those featherweight early schedule opponents where they rack up 70 points a game and pad their stats. Why should Pitt? But Penn State and WV should always be included, much better than any phony rivalries in the ACC not to mention the crowd draw.

Well when You play actual opponents every week You need a break. Most conferences get all the breaks they need right in their own conferences.
I can't tell You how many times the Razorbacks play Georgia, Alabama, and LSU not counting any other teams.

Going through an SEC or Big 10 schedule is difficult enough. There was a good chance that if Clemson had only one loss at the end of last year's regular season, they may not have been picked for the college football playoff because the ACC is so weak. Then they lost to a middle-tier SEC team in South Carolina. That talk existed even before last year and Clemson went ahead and booked some games against LSU and Georgia because their regular season ACC opponents are so weak.

Pitt's concern isn't making the college football playoff but with drawing fans and selling season tickets. Plus, those games against good teams are nationally televised rather than regional broadcasts which helps Pitt sell its brand to recruits.
