It is funny, I think Herbig is going to be Bud Dupree's Alex Highsmith.

Eventually Alex will price himself out of Pittsburgh and Herbig will become the up-and-coming star outside linebacker, much in the way that Alex did when Bud left.

Possibly. They can franchise him in 24 if a deal is not done. If its a fair deal on both sides he will get the contract.

To me the OLBers are the second most important position, the Defensive Line being first.

Herbig I am hoping gets some solid reps in camp and shows he is ready for prime time to be the swing.

That would be bad.. Dupree gave us a good contract year season but for the most part he battled injuries here... I still remember Titan twitter fans celebrating when they signed him.. that honeymoon did not last very long.

Perhaps I am too optimistic. But I am looking forward to this season with so much lofty expectations that I have not had in years. Can't wait for actual schedule to come next week.
Feeling great about the Offensive Line and Pickett going forward. Go Steelers!!!

What? In my Example Alex Highsmith is the Veteran Bud Dupree, and Herbig is the young Alex Highsmith.

I hope they start the OLB rotations right out of the box, so we can see Herbig go up against the other teams actual starters in the preseason. Hell we will probably know what's up in camp with the two Rookies going at it everyday.

Jones vs Herbig who you got? I can see Tomlin bringing those 2 together again, and again, and go again.... :)

I heard on a podcast that Herbig's arm length is more of a concern, than his size. I would bet Highsmith is around 255lbs now.

Yeah you never know. Belichick signed a former college lacrosse player at WR and he burned us for around 230 yards in the AFC championship game. The Cowboys signed Bob Hayes right after he won the 100 meter gold in the 1964 Olympics and now he's in the HOF.

Why would you use highsmith as bud dupree for? U hate him? lol. The better highsmith plays the better for the team.. I would want him to command a huge 2nd contract, that means this team defensively is elite since we already have an all pro on the other side in TJ.

But I get what you are saying and I agree, I just hope the rookie really has the goods for us to project him raising Highsmith's floor in another year

I am hoping they can lock him in, I could not find a tag figure for OLB's this year, the tag for safeties was nearly 13 million, whatever the figure it's locked in the CAP unless you can get a deal done and move some of that figure into the future. It just freezes your ability to move in so many directions. It makes sense if you are close enough and think you can make the deal, or your team is that close to a SB run and that guy makes a difference, other than that you sometimes have to bite the bullet and move in another direction. They had holes to fill, along with depth. I think all of the first 5 picks did just that. Herbig is not the typically framed OLB, but neither was James Harrison. Have no idea how they work him, or if he succeeds, but excited to watch.

Tag figure for a LB in 2024 is estimated to be $20,062,000. For a DE its $24446000. Transition tags are $16695000 and $19535000.

Yea that's an issue. They do what they have to do, but hopefully they can get a deal done.

I guess my point is this year we started with somewhere around that number (maybe higher) and look what was accomplished. The CAP is fluid in doing things, but in the end you still have to hit that number. When you use the tag it freezes the numbers you can use and makes it more difficult to even make the kind of deals...especially in volume made this year.

Looks like Van Noy is coming aboard, if he has anything left in tank
a valuable addition to give our two starters rests for rotational purposes.

i liked van noy a lot when he was drafted. i wanted him then.

we have two draft picks here as well in herbig and roche everyone seems to forget. roche was in a bad situation in NY when they switched DC's and scheme. so was crowder at the time. they just didn't fit what the new guy wanted. we got them both and they are better players than many think. very good depth as far as i'm concerned. we never really got to see what roche could do here. we also have a rookie UDFA that may be a steal david perales.

Van Noy would be a solid addition. Add Herbig into the equation and the position behind the two starters looks promising.

I have said they need to bring in a vet for insurance.

One out there as well is Justin Houston who had 9.5 sacks last season for the crows in a part time roll.

All the ones left have some age but also vet experience.

They might not have Premium left in the tank but i'm sure there is a full tank of Mid Grade.

At this point it's waiting and tweeking. They are tight against the CAP, only have 90 spots for camp. That said June cuts will likely see some familiar names out there, plus whatever cuts we make (if any), and any restructuring needing done to get CAP Complient and have the necessary expenses for emergency. Kind of a slow period, but interested to see if Omar has any magic left, and that includes getting Highsmith extended.

I remember that about Melvin Ingram having T-rex arms coming out of college. Searched for an article. Chargers GM had a hilarious response.

    https://www.espn.com/blog/afcwest/post/_/id/43823/will-ingram-short-arm-the-skeptics

One of the reasons why pass-rusher Melvin Ingram fell to the San Diego Chargers at the No. 18 pick in the recent NFL draft was his relatively short arms.

The South Carolina product was expected to be a top-10 pick yet one of the few red flags on Ingram is he doesn’t have the long arms that classic pass-rushers have. Ingram’s arm length is 31.5 inches, according to Steve Muench of Scouts Inc.

The Chargers aren’t worried about Ingram’s arms and were thrilled that Ingram fell to them. San Diego general manager A.J. Smith quipped to U-T San Diego about Ingram’s supposed issue:"I think Melvin will have the same problem Tyrannosaurus rex had millions of years ago."

That is supposedly the rumor, would definitely be a valuable addition, similar to what they were looking for in Melvin Ingram. I like it if it is true!

Is this Van Noy thing an actual rumor? All that I can see is that PFF labels the Steelers as the best landing spot for him.

I honestly cannot remember if Roche had a good preseason with us after he was drafted, he did make it to the final cuts and either was or would have made the PS. I do remember the Giants grabbing him at one point, was let go and we signed him at one point, at least to a future reserve. I'm with you, the guy had a lot of talent to be excited about and sometimes it's just numbers and being in the wrong place. If they did not see something in him they would hot have given him the reserve, how that translates will show up in camp, but at times it just takes a guy a while to get up to the NFL game.
