    Draft Scouting Report:

    Rating: 80.50 (Long-term)

    Pro Comparison: Antrel Rolle

    Accolades:

    • 2022: Honorable mention All-Big Ten (coaches)
    • 2022: Team-high 10 pass breakups
    Summary:

Cory Trice excels as a tackler and is an asset in run support. At his size, his NFL future may be at safety, or as a hybrid chess piece; he can sometimes get too handsy in coverage downfield, which will be penalized at the next level.

    Strengths:

    • Can manhandle WRs at line of scrimmage because of size
    • Will he have to move to safety because of frame?
    • Shows ability to play tight coverage vs. quick slant and then out-physical WR at catch point
    • Shows ability to come off man in zone coverage and make play on routes in front of him
    • Packs punch as a tackler
    • Asset in run support because he's not afraid to lay the wood vs. RBs
    Weaknesses:

    • Can get handsy beyond five yards
    • Should be better about getting off blocks because of size; needs to show more urgency
    • Can struggle to stay in phase at top of in-breaking routes
    Combine Results:

    • 40-Yard Dash: 4.47 seconds
    • Vertical: 35.5 inches
    • Broad Jump: 11 feet, 0 inches

    CBS grade.......

    Cory Trice CB, PURDUE
    Height: 6-3, Weight: 206

Tall, lengthy outside CB with a savvy and athletic game. Sticks to WRs and even when he doesn't his length gets him to the football often. Tested well for his massive frame. Tremendous tackler. Super steal. (Chris Trapasso)

    A+

I see a lot to like, but even in his highlights, you can see that he is too handsy. Maybe he moves to safety. Love his physicality.

I like this kid. For as late as we got him it was a good solid pick. Should eventually help out.

Good student, hard worker. Good size, not afraid to lay the lumber to ball carriers. I see him as possibly a strong safety.

Per Lance Zierlien's scouting report, a tidbit at the end:

    Sources Tell Us

“He’s getting slept on. He can’t play in certain coverages, but that guy is a monster in press.” -- Midwest scout for AFC team

And this grade was buried between a lot of C's and D's, so hardly one of those sites that give everything a range of B- to A+

Are you ready for some heavy press man coverage these next few years? It certainly looks like that’s the outside corner roster that we’re building. Bullies on the outside and Minkah roaming the deep areas, allowing them to take some risks. It’s going to be some fun defensive football.

My reservation is that playing a lot of man coverage vs LJ will turn your defenders’ backs to him, and until proven otherwise, playing the QB run needs to be job #1 vs. him.

I think teams have figured Lamar out a little by loading the box and pressuring him. Playing press man coverage on their WRs allows more men in the box to prevent him from running and blitzing to pressure him to make quick decisions which I think is his weakness.

Agree, but… OBJ is good at evading press coverage and Flowers is elusive and quick. I’m sure part of their roster strategy this past offseason was to avoid what happened last year and give LJ a chance to have someone open early. I still play some Cover zero and attack him for sure, but I’d mix in zone coverages as well. Show him different looks at the line.

That's what I'm a little worried about is the quicker small receivers like Ja'Marr Chase, Flowers, OBJ that can give bigger corners fits if they don't get their hands on them to reroute them and throw the passing game off.

Actually his physicality or lack there of for his size is one of his weaknesses. He needs to improve on playing against the run.

When you see his personal history, the fight and dedication, I for one just want the kid to kick ass, lol. But yea, despite some of the grades, and getting him in the 7th was perhaps a real steal, he was still there for a reason. That said, watching and hoping he shows and grows enough to make the 53.
