Hmmmm. Why on earth would they do that? Are they preparing to sign Dupree and need to free up a spot/money? I do not understand this move, can someone explain it?

It's a strange move. It doesn't reallysave them any cap space. My guess is something health related.

They're way under the off-season roster limit so it's not to open up a spot. They're also not in need of immediate call relief so it's not that.

Could be health or maybe Jones was caught looking down Mrs Tomlin's blouse. A guy who's on the bubble for a spot on the final 53 isn't given a lot of leeway with questionable behavior.

My guess is we'll never know the real reason he was dumped.

He has absolutely no bearing on the cap number IIRC.

He signed a minimum contract tender as an Exclusive rights FA. That's @ $980k then once you account for the roster displacement, can't be cap or roster space reasons.

Only thing I could think of is if he went to the team and asked them to release him, so he could get himself back on the market before the draft.

It's either that or the team knows he's about to get a suspension from the league for something.

Six weeks after signing him? He played all last year for us. 86 plays on defense and 251 on special teams. Roche was about 6 weeks or more ago. Maybe that made him expendable and they plan on drafting one. Or signing one.

Free up a roster spot for Bud? It is the offseason, so you are talking about a 90-man roster.

There is no obvious reason to do this right now, even if he wasn’t in the plans there is no harm keeping guys like him until roster cut downs later in the summer.

Maybe he knew that he had no chance of making the roster and they’re just giving him the time and opportunity find another team

Are they on the hook for his entire contract or does that kick in in stages? If they cut him before he reached some milestone that would cost them more I could kind of get it. But it won’t cost them much to keep him, nor save them much to cut him.
He seems like the kind of guy who they would resign when someone gets hurt. Plays special teams, can fill in, knows system, not a jagoff (that I know of).
Odd move, unless I have missed something. Which I probably have.

they signed tanner muse. our new LB coach player formerly with seattle. cutting jones saved them 940,000. they knew what jones could do from last year.

Aha, it all makes sense now. The Steelers signed Jones when he was the best option available. When Muse was cut, he became a better option. That’s probably all it is.

I doubt the move was a financial one. None of his salary was guaranteed so they are not liable for any dead cap or anything. The move doesn’t save them anything either when roster displacement is taken in to account, i.e. whoever replaces him will have the same salary.

The contract he had would be mostly paid during the season if he made the roster, players like him only earn a pittance during the offseason. They are well under the roster limit so even after signing Muse they could have easily held on to Jones if they wanted to, albeit he probably wasn’t making the team anyway

Thanks for the info, I didn't see this anywhere.

Sounds like muse will be a good addition to the special teams. We are still without Watt and Snell on special teams.

This really makes no sense. He's not good, but they have no depth at outside linebacker and it looks like Dupree is signing elsewhere, so why cut a guy loose now?

he's another one of those LB/safety tweeners. much like neal. i expect he may be a little more than just a special teamer here. he ran a 4.41 at the combine but has put on a little weight to play LB. could be a nice package type player in certain defensive sets. seems to me they are looking to use these types in the 3 safety look defenses as a little better coverage but still able to play down in the box, while minkah and kazee roam the backend. i remember him at clemson and he was very good. he played all over, so it was hard for offenses to know where he was or coming from. some of this could help out the pass rush.

I doubt he will be more than the fourth inside linebacker and special teamer, but that's fine. Maybe he can play outside or maybe they can move Robinson there. At this point, that's the real concern.
