His current popularity didn't come out of nowhere. He had an entertaining presence on social media when he was still playing. He wasn't ever likely to be a traditional broadcaster, but the roots of what he does now have been in place for a long time.

I met McAfee when he was just starting to play football for Plum High School. I was a general assignment sports reporter then, which mostly meant covering high schools. He often talks about how he was always that way, doing what felt right for him no matter what anybody had to say about it, and he is right. He was an outstanding soccer player when he was in junior high school, but he switched his focus to football. I remember asking him why and he told me, "Because I'm going to kick in the NFL." The way he said it wasn't as if he was expressing his hopes or dreams. In his mind, it was a fact. It was going to happen. I have rooted for him ever since.

There may be more to it, but I really think it is just his desire to be more informal than most of the sports broadcasters out there.

 

Cool story. I've always gotten a kick out of McAfee. He's quite the character. My son is having a pretty good year on the pitch. Might have to talk him into trying out for his horrendous football team.

I’d love a job with that kind of minimum salary for 6 months of work, best health care money can buy, personal fitness training and advice, free meals for part of the day, travel to all those cities, woman treating you almost like rockstars, and the other team isn’t allowed to hit you or they get whacked with fines.

Sign me up. I shoulda been practicing that job all of my life!
