I dont see us drafting Porter, for cornerback you demand ball hawks, interceptions is the point at cornerback, the purpose for you to be out there besides making tackles is to intercept, interceptions are so much more important than decent coverage (breakups) or tackling, of course you want a corner who has coverage and tackling skills but interceptions, that what corner is all about (see Rod Woodson), so I wld have to say as good a player people think JPJ is, he has one recorded interception, to me that is mind boggling, you are a cornerback, thats why you play the position (I know I played corner all be it at a younger age, but I was about interceptions (as well as tackling) and I got a few, I wouldn't draft him in the first round

 

A guy like JPJ probably wasn't targeted as much as his teammates, Jalen Ramsey only had 3 interceptions in college, I wouldn't pass on JPJ just because of the low interception numbers.

Tomlin has a thing for Porter probably because of Joey so I fully expect him to be drafted if he’s available.

 

No, this is not even close to correct. Coverage is far more important for a cornerback than interceptions. Darrelle Revis intercepted only 29 passes in 11 seasons, yet he is in the Hall of Fame. That is just one example.

 

The lowest pre-draft ranking I've seen has Porter as the 17th-best overall prospect. Everybody has him going in the first round and cornerback is a position of need. It is just ridiculous to suggest they would only take him due to Tomlin's connection with his father.

 

But would you be surprised if Gonzalez or one of the other top 2 or 3 were somehow available? Are you thinking they like him or most comfortable with him than the rest?

 

Im not saying it’s the only factor or that he isn’t ranked as a first rd prospect I believe he is. I’m saying if it comes down to a couple players they like and he’s one of them you know Tomlin is going that route because of Joey/Steelers family/recycle of players mentality the organization has.

I heard a very rational thought on a pod cast that one major factor is, that IF the Steelers pick JPJ, its not just about NFL bloodlines or simple familiarity, but more to do with an extra intimate knowledge of the guy himself due to his fathers rolls with the team as a player and coach and knowing this kid through most of, if not every stage of his life relatively closely.

Part of picking players is not just their athletic ability, game tape, stats experience and fit, which are all the obvious huge factors in picking a player, especially in the first round, but almost as important and maybe just as important is - character.

Guys they interview or do research on are still some level of guessing. With a person like JPJ they are extremely familiar with and probably even more than Kenny Pickett. They don’t have to guess with JPJ at all. If they are comfortable or even ecstatic with him as a person combined with his football bonafides up to this point you can almost pencil him in. Unless obviously there is another player that checks a few more boxes and they are willing to gamble.

JPJ is going to be in extra serious consideration and probably a difficult decision for them to pass over if there are other players they have ranked slightly ahead of him at a position of need.

Given those realities, I don’t blame them and will be happy with the pick because all I’ve read about the guy is he’s a very stand up, hard working human. Plus, his resume at a great college program is solid. I’d bet there would be an extra layer of effort from him to build on his family name and legacy in Pittsburgh - his home town and team.

It’s not nepotism in the case the way the word is defined. It’s about familiarity with the guys character due to nearly growing up in the stadium and family.

Plus, lots of people put some level of value on athletic blood lines. This kid/guy watched and I’m sure was coached up by a Steelers pro bowl player (who will or should go into the Steelers hall of honor IMO).

 

I agree mostly, but there does exist some grey and unknowns. Sometimes NFL bloodlines invite complacency: Devin Bush. I understand he got injured and respectfully battled back from that but, overall, it didn't work out w Devin Bush as a first round talent.

 

That is an excellent explanation of a good point. In a way, it is similar to Pickett. I wrote last year that I felt more confident in Pickett because the Steelers took him. They knew him better than anybody else, so they were more likely to understand his strengths and weaknesses. The same is true of Porter.

 

PSU Fan...In your opinion, Do you think Porter is fast enough/ athletic enough?

I think it was CBS mock that had us trading down (I think 24), the trade team took Porter and we took the edge from Iowa. I doubt that happens, but nothing this year would surprise me.

 

Damn, that is surprising. I knew the guy was great but didn't really follow him. I'd have guessed his INT.'s total much higher.

Does anyone know for a fact? I thought I read some trash rumors that they had a falling out over some drama due to their sons playing on the same HS team? Not exactly sure what that was about?

Then Joey got let go as a coach around that time too.
