I think Hodge would be great for finding guys like how he played. High IQ, high motor and great instincts.

I believe Merril still lives in Idaho

Maybe that gives them more info on a otherwise non scouting area of the mountain states

This 7 minute clip alone makes me think this is a great move. When the entire world was on the Johnny Manziel bandwagon, Merrill was not only not on it, he absolutely NAILED Johnny Football and embarrassed Skip Bayless.

Wonder how much this is due to the deep cuts ESPN is having to make?

I swear....I tried telling people this. I watched a lot on Johnny M., and You people know how I always say Qbs make 97% of their weapons.....Well this was the 3% that made their Qb.

Don't forget heart. Rocky-esk kind of guy. Not comparing overall success, just the attitude to get it done, whatever it takes. A couple of guys cone to mine, Randy Grossman, Rich Erenberg (loved him, but his body just did not hold up), Hodge, Tim Lester.

I briefly met Merril Hoge once when he was talking to an auditorium full of high school kids

He was a good speaker and seemed to be a very nice person

I thought he was still doing part time work for NFL specific content. But I honestly can't remember seeing him since pre covid lock down.

I would assume so, but you never know. It might have been similar to the Flores hire

I remember this and he of course was spot on but Manziel was the most obvious bust I have ever seen come out of college. Painfully obvious.

I think he kind of wore out his welcome with his stance on CTE.

I've always considered Merril Hoge to be very intelligent both on the field and off of it as well. Steelers always try to go after high character people. Doesn't always pan out that way but it does more often than not. Very happy that he is scouting for our team. He definitely has an eye for talent and how it translates to the NFL.
