    Right…?

    Mitch 1 more year = 8 million

Mason re-sign for 3-4 mill for 4 years each.

Then get a practice guy from the undrafted lot.

Now with the 4 million saved from Tribisky you can hopefully grab Dupree for a season or throw it towards Edmunds on a one year deal again or put it into the pile to retain Highsmith and get that behind us.

What extra value does Tribs provide over Rudolph? If Mitch is going into a game in relief what are the odds that he’s going to win better than Mason’s to you?

Seems pretty even if you ask me. He’s not worth 4 million more if the money actually goes towards another players efforts combined with Mason. Especially with what seems to be a more powerful running offensive line like we are building.

The Steelers are creating an offensive unit that won’t be so reliant on the QB’s passing wizardry and leaning towards a power control game. Mason or any other guy can hand off in an emergency.

Get rid of Mitch. Good guy, but not for his price tag…

Everything I've read and heard suggests that Rudolph wants no part of the Steelers at this point. Maybe he would have to settle if every other team in the NFL passes on him, but he wants out.

Also, even with the relatively poor performance this past season, Trubisky's career resume is better than Rudolph's.

Its always going to be some hit and miss. i've seen it written that in theory you can keep anyone. We know thats not true, but in a specific time frame you can get and push dollars down the road trying to get that ring..Rams being a recent example. The Steelers already had massive amount of CAP dollars invested in the DL when Hargrave came up, they might have been able to keep him, the cost at the time and even pushing it into the future costs a team. With Hargrave and Hilton on the books, who is not resigned, TJ??? That is ridicules of course, but you can't keep them all. Highsmith is one I really want to keep, but (especially if he has a great year) likely will price himself out of our reach.

Just to F with you a bit, but this coming from a guy who says Tommy Maddox was underrated..his time in the 'Burgh he had 1 more td than int. (as starter and back up). His lifetime QBR was 72. For both Mitch and MR you have issues, neither is going to get you far, both can likely on a BU situation both win a couple and lose a couple.

Yeah, I’m not seeing his market being very deep. I doubt he’ll make more money anywhere else and have to make a physical move into the unknown for the same job, because there is zero chance he’s offered a starting gig. The devil you know sorta thing.

Mitch’s resume is def better but it ain’t sparkling and certainly now worth four million more. I would bet a paycheck that there are not any other teams who think much differently too.

Both of these guys are forever career back-ups now and worth about 3 million tops for their next contract. Do they want to work in western PA or somewhere else is the only question.

With Kenny’s concussion history they will get game day snaps here as much as anywhere else.

I still think there may be an extension in the works for Mitch to sign on as a fulltime backup.

And I just read where Dobbs signed back with Cleveland.

I would think that would depend on who QB3 and QB4 are Mac. He didn't even get considered when Kenny was out and Mitch stunk up the joint. So unless every other QB on the roster isn't an UDFA who played 1 year of D2 ball then Mason potentially is getting overlooked by Coach T.

You are missing the point. Rudolph seems to think he didn't get a fair shot and he was clearly pissed about that, so no, I don't think he would even consider an offer from the Steelers that is comparable to one he got elsewhere. I don't think he would return unless he got no offers at all from any other team, which seems unlikely. Someone is going to offer him a backup job.

If Pickett keeps having concussion problems, the Steelers have much bigger problems than a few extra million for their backup quarterback.

I’m still holding to my prediction that his career will follow the path of Landry Jones. In fact I think Jones was even better than Rudolph.

I don't know what to make of him. He can't be all that stupid since he can understand an NFL offense. There are a ton of plays he has to know in order to function. I agree with you on matters other than football he just doesn't seem to have it together. Especially in representing himself.

Well, Mitch is a better QB than Mason... so that is why we are holding onto him at the moment. Trubisky won against Cincy week 1, beat the Bucs in relief of injured KP, and beat the Panthers on the road. That's 3 wins. The last time we saw Mason was when he took a team that made the playoffs and couldn't find a way to beat the winless Lions at home. So, I would say that Mitch has much better odds to win a game as a back up than Mason does. However, if we need the money I could see us getting rid of Mitch for the cap space. Mitch isn't non-expendable by any means, but is a decent back up option behind our young QB.

KP got hurt twice last year. Having a quality back up is never bad, but they usually cost more than a million or three like Mason. If we don't want that high end back up and just want a guy we can continue to deploy the Mason Rudolph's and Landry Jones' of the world at a low cap hit. Just depends on how we want to address the position.

Mitch is a GREAT back-up at a cheaper price. And I agree he’s “better” but it’s marginal. Not going to debate the wins associated with his name - that could be exhausting and not wasting my personal cap space on him. Lol.

As a backup he threw three interceptions in one game to the Ravens. I'm not sure how much he is worth at the backup position. Rudolph at a reduced price is probably no worse.

Don’t remind me… I drove 10 hours round trip and dropped a bucket of money for me and my wife to have our first vacation type thing post Covid and while we had a great time doing stuff around town - the game was a deflating let down. Can’t believe the effort I put in to watch Tribisky’s sloppy effort.

I won’t lie that that scenario plays into my opinion of his value. Felt like I was watching Neil O’Donell again…

He also came on in relief and played very well in the win over the Bucs.

Of course, he's not going to be consistent. He's a backup for a reason. That doesn't mean he isn't better than Rudolph.

Looks like Terrell Edmunds will not be back with Steelers looks like he will be moving on.

Terrell wasn't as bad as many would make him out to be.

Didn't make a lot of splash plays, but solid tackler and was never hurt, he was always available.

Mitch is a higher end back up though. Someone good enough to start on a bad team, but not quite good enough to be the long term option for a team to invest their future in.

If you look at the contracts of "higher tier" back ups, Mitch fits in line. Bridgewater, Brissett, and Heinicke are all comparable players. Bridgewater is the cheapest at 6.5million/year, Heinicke and Mitch have nearly identical contracts at 7million/yr, and Brissett is highest at 8million/yr (per year, cap hits can vary). That is just the going rate for a player of that caliber. I'd love to have Mitch at 4-5 million a year instead of 7, but Andy Dalton at age 35 is making 5.5million/yr and Mitch is a better player than him at this stage of their careers.

While I would love to have all of our players on discount rates in order to have more quality players on the roster.... Mitch is appropriately paid. It is a valid argument on whether we should pay for a higher end back up or not, but its not like we massively overpay Mitch.

Unfortunate that he is moving on, but hopefully he got a really good contract for him. It will be interesting to see what his contract looks like and who ended up adding his services.

Solid player, will definitely be missed. I wonder what that means for us in terms of SS. Kazee is likely slotted in this spot for now, but that isn't a long term answer. I'm sure that means we will prioritize adding one in the draft.
