What's the chances of the Steelers moving to this look as the permanent base set for the defense? I'm not a complete fan of going to this look due to the running prowess of Baltimore and Cleveland as well as running teams like Tennessee. But as the league is evolving more as a pass happy league and the success the 3-safety look brought us, I felt like bringing up this possibility as the base set. I know colleges like WVU went with a 335 but mostly with a slot corner as a starting position as opposed to a 3rd safety on the field. A 3-safety look with Minkah, Edmunds and say Brian Branch could be a very solid Safety group. This also eliminates the ILB need if we're going with Myles Jack, Robert Spillane and Mark Robinson, but probably Safety depth for the 3 slots.

Not advocating for this... Just off-season fodder to BS about heading into the draft and things that can affect the building of the draft board and other thangs to go along with it ie, FA acquisitions.

When we (WVU) went to it, teams trampled us. We couldn't stop a pig in a narrow alley.
I never want to see that defense again.

But the passing game is going to become more dominate what with the QB's wearing dresses and stuff.

they have been going to this for several years. trying marcus allen , kazee, maulet. all safety tweeners. they may call them safeties or linebackers but they are all safeties playing all around the defense. even edmunds as a more in the box safety with kazee also on the field. just a slightly different picture of this same thing.

What’s the pass-game bias like in college v. the NFL?

    I don't really know.
A team like Alabama, they threw ~38 times a game and rush ~36...

Just glancing at it ...I would say the average is 23 attempts in college ...remember some teams like Air Force(with like 9 a game) ....bring it lower. NFL about 34.
    Again at a glance.

Karl, I didn’t know you were a wvu guy too. Good to have another mountaineer around here.

Karl is right, wvu got gashed on a weekly basis playing the 3-3-5.

I don’t know this for sure, but I’ve always felt we moved to it because of our lack of success in recruiting any quality defensive lineman. Like coach T always says, there’s only so many of those big athletic guys on the planet and most end up at Alabama, Ohio state, Clemson, etc. It’s easier to find 5’11” 200 lb athletes and play an extra db.

This is just my personal theory. Conversely, I think the lack of quality offensive line recruits has propagated the rise of the spread offense around the college landscape too.

Recruiting has been an issue for sure. And you are spot on.

I think you're onto something here. One thing I noticed when watching the combine is the bulk of ILB, and even some edge guys, were built more like SSs did 20 years ago. I could easily see Troy being an off ball LB in today's game.

They actually tried that for part of a season at the end when we had a bunch of injuries at LB

    He was horrible at it

I'm not saying it would or wouldn't have worked, but that was an entirely different version of Troy.
