Why didn't Pittsburgh Tender and of their RFAs?

I can't figure out why Pittsburgh did not keep any of their RFAs this year. No starters here, but we could have definitely brought them back for 2023. I was counting on all 3 of these guys making the opening Day roster, as backups and Special Teamers.
    upload_2023-3-17_10-32-45.png

I didn't think RFA Tenders were expensive. All 3 of these guys would have contributed in 2023.

What is the difference between a 1 year RFA Tender, and a 1 year free agent contract? What is the cost on an undrafted RFA?

I guess the Steelers could have also been wanting to sign these guys to multi year contracts and not just given them the 1 year tender? Maybe?

My guess is there are a couple reasons. First and foremost we were pretty tight against the cap when the new league year started. Secondly none of those guys are worth the 2.5+ million an original round/ right of first refusal tender would cost

Are you saying the minimum RFA, for an Undrafted Free Agent would be $2.5 million.

The only dollar figures that I could find posted for RFAs were 1st and 2nd round guys. Do the rest 3rd round and down, including Undrafted Free Agents all default to $2.5 million 1 year contracts?

Right-of-first-refusal tender: One-year contract worth $2.627 million. Team has the right to match any offer sheet signed with another team, but there is no draft compensation tied to this tender.https://www.nfl.com/news/2023-nfl-f...l-information-on-franchise-tags-contract-term

I think it would be a savings of $1.5 million per player to sign these players to a free agent league minimum contracts. I would have spent the extra $1.5 million to be guaranteed Simms and Pierre were both back on the team this year. JC I would have rolled the dice on him coming back and saved the $1.5 million for the Cap.

Where you were drafted is not a factor it’s what rights the team assigns. A guy could have been an UDFA but is really good so the team assigns him a First Round Tender.

Exactly. You draft a guy in the 7th that turns out to be a future member of the hall of fame you assign a first round tender at a minimum

Pierre might have been worth it, but there is enough guys looking for work you can bring in cheaper. There is the value of the player knowing your system, but let em test the market and see who makes a grab. If they comeback they may get a small signing bonus, but other than that nothing is guaranteed.

Bring Sims and Pierre back for cheaper deals.

I agree, but that additional value only extends to the player's current team. Using Pierre as an example, he has less value to other teams than he does to the Steelers. Therefore our top offer is pretty sure to beat another teams top offer, but still less than the minimum to to tender him. It's basically a game of chicken to save money.

For sure, I think Pierre was worth the tender, especially with the lack of depth.

If they don't bring Pierre back, hopefully they double dip in the draft at CB.

    I got it Pick a Player any Player, and then pick from one of these 3 options: 1st @ $6.05, 2nd @ $4.3, or Original/none @ $2.67

When we picked up Haskins option we went with the cheapest option: Original Tender, even though he was drafted in the 1st and we could have lost him if some crazy team had wanted to give up a 1st round pick.

Also, Say in 2025 when Jaylen Warren becomes a RFA, the Steelers can put a 1st round Tender on him, even though he was an undrafted Free Agent.

Funny, Gunner's Cap hit this year is $2.67 the exact same amount it would have cost to keep Sims.

I thought they’d cut Witherspoon and tender Pierre. Pierre might be back at a league minimum type number if he doesn’t get an offer from another team, maybe Sims too.

I wouldn’t be upset about losing any of them tbh though, they are roster bubble guys that will probably never be starters.

Sims was one of the more exciting returner we’ve had in years. Hate to see him leave

Also sometimes players think they are worth more than the team does

So if a contract extension doesn’t work they go out and test the market

Sometimes the team matches any offer they get

It's obvious, they're fringe guys that they would like to come back, but think they can upgrade at the very least. Did like Sims at PR though. Had a couple close ones, but I like that he had that mentality.

Just read where Sims is visiting the Texans. Sims's hometown is Houston Texas.

They should've kept Sims over Gunner, Sims had that big catch to pick up a first down on the game winning drive against the Ravens.

Gunner was supposed to be the safe returner. Had that hiccup stretch which was highly unusual. Problem is he hasn’t shown that he can actually break one as a Steeler, so he strikes no fear. When you strike no fear, you don’t have that extra pucker factor that creates mistakes, either in coverage or by the kicker!

Without Gunners return ability what value does he bring to the roster? I mean he is still on the roster as of today, so is the return job given back to him in 2023 to begin the season?

There's no reason to cut him now. There's plenty of room for him on the off-season roster.

I'm more interested in the 3rd QB they bring in for a rookie mini-camp arm.

We have discussions on here about why the standard isn’t the standard anymore. And yet, we also have discussions about why we didn’t bring back a bunch of guys who weren’t good enough.
