I wouldnt want him for a starter but I think he is head and shoulders better than any other backup QB out there.

His career will only be over if he doesn’t accept a backup roll which is a distinct possibility, I think he has a huge ego.

No doubt Trubiski has 'starter aspirations.'
This can be a distraction to the team too.
It would be great to have a journeyman that has been a backup and made a good living there.
Henne was a good example, Gabbert is another.

Backups should be pushing the starter but once the competition is settled, that QB room needs to be on the same page exchanging knowledge/experiences.
Charlie Batch was good guy as a backup. I liked his approach.

I'm not sure that is true. It definitely set him back, but Wentz rebounded physically. He is still mobile and he still has a great arm. He doesn't seem to be shying away from contact as Devin Bush did upon returning from his knee injury. If anything, Wentz is still too willing to take a hit. The larger issue with Wentz is that he never seemed to grow mentally. He still makes too many poor reads and those lead to turnovers. He still doesn't process things fast enough. He still struggles to make touch throws. It is the mental things holding him back, not the physical. It is more likely that Reich managed to work around Wentz's mental limitations for a little while, but teams have figured out how to take advantage since then.

I'm sure the knee injury is a factor, but as Blast wrote, Wentz is not coachable and that is his biggest problem.

I mostly agree, but I'm not even sure I'd want him as a backup. We saw what it can do when a backup quarterback comes in and starts turning the ball over when Trubisky came in for Pickett against the Ravens. That is likely to be what Wentz would do. He will make some big plays, but more often than not, he will ruin his team with killer mistakes.

Good news, hopefully this means they can get these two done.

Guess Trubisky will be here another year at least. Just can’t imagine he wouldnt push to be released.

Maybe once he cooled off he realized he's not likely to get another starting job right now. If that's the case, staying in Pittsburgh for another $8 million or with an extension isn't such a bad option.

If they're gonna keep Mitch, they almost have to restructure/add term. That '23 cost is a lot for a backup. Speaking of which...

You still have Garappolo and Mayfield looking for teams. I am assuming both of them will want a chance to compete for the Starting job, so maybe you are not counting those 2 as part of your "Any other backup QB out there" group.

And, I think the Steelers can keep Mitch on the roster without having to renegotiate his contract. If you release Mitch you save $8 million, but it is probably going to cost you $6 million to bring in another Vet who has no idea how to run Canada's offense to replace him. I have come full circle on the idea of keeping Mitch and not saving the $8 million.

I don’t think much of Baker at all as a QB but yes, probably both those guys will land on another team as a starter. Especially Jimmy G.

Mitch isn’t very good so if they keep him I hope it’s not at 8 million. You can find someone for half that who will give you just as good a chance to win as Mitch does. I believe they already asked him to take a pay cut.

I bet you are in for a little Sticker Shock this offseason, as Backup QBs price tags are going to go through the roof after last season.

I bet they don't. Of course I could be wrong, but.... Every year there are more starters made backups, and more backups drafted.
The 8 million for Trubisky is pretty high for a backup, and he's not that good of a backup.
The backups role is not try to prove He's the starter everytime He must see the field, and by doing so lose the game (Ravens).

Even if the average went up 20% Mitch would still have an inappropriately large contract

They get more leverage as guys like Mariota become available. That said, I could see them taking the cost certainty with Trubisky rather than cut him and risk having to dig into the open market for their backup.

Last year we paid our 3rd string QB $5 million. If your inactive 3rd string QB is pulling down $5 million how much should your active Backup QB be making?

That is the reason I have changed my thoughts on Keeping Mitch; We only save $8 million and it is going to cost us $8 million to bring in a vet that has ZERO experience with Matt Canada's offense.

If we keep Mitch, I have no problem with a Rookie sitting at the #3 spot this year. That would save us about $4 million over Mason's contract last year.

Is it good or bad to have experience with Canada's offense? Otherwise your numbers make sense.

I would be shocked. Don’t let Mitch’s 8 million fool you, he was given that to be the starter.

If you remember we paid Mason $5 when he was the only QB on our roster

He in essence at that time was our starter

The situation this year is much different

If Trubisky stays, they might look to do an extension with him to lower his cap hit in 2023.

    So cheaper than us.
All I'm getting at is if our backup isn't any better than others.....then maybe we (Steelers) shouldn't pay him like He is. That's all.

They both are too much for backups.
