They didn’t announce Flores until the end of February, I’m hoping they aren’t planning on going into the season with the same offensive coaching staff. I saw someone post that Tomlin said they won’t be adding anyone, hope that’s not true.

Leftwich or Pep are a couple names for offense and I saw Lovie Smith mentioned to replace Flores.

If no coaching moves then the next meaningful date will be March 13th, the unofficial start of free agency.

Blast, to your OP. The expectations if they were going to fire Canada were answered, the announcement no further additions to staff were coming now puts the everything on people who really have not shown much. If it is suddenly a success then kudos and Canada can be elevated to the HC interviews that will be open next year, or if it continues he can walk away and we continue the same old way.

I used to think a bigger staff was a waste, but the game has evolved to the point where even the smallest details can make a difference. Dan Patrick in an interview with Trevor Lawrence asked him to call out a long play. He spouted out a long winded verbage, then said coming to the line you then communicate the 'tags' from the play. He explained tags being the WR may reverse roles, RB swtching lanes, etc. Point being that the game has become so complicated, that play..plus the audible, all the line adjustments..blah blah. He said the wrist band is crucial for him on those long plays.

I know they are expecting to expand the playbook for Kenny and company, the addition of a receiving coordinator, while a few years ago was unheard of now seems to be more common. I honestly do not know the success, but it certainly is warranted.

I wish that were true... but the whipping post and scapegoat, Canada, will continue to dominate discussions around here.

So do you then think that Canada is a solid qualified offensive mind?

Well Tomlin is putting all his eggs in the Canada basket not bringing in a qualified Offensive assistant. Good times...

Hopefully we hear they are retaining Sutton and Spillane. All the top tier UFA won't be in the cards. So the waiting game will continue until the smoke clears.

I've heard 2 coaches are expected to be added. (That is rumor but the source is worthy.)

Based on the fact that they are understaffed, I think it's a no-brainer.
But, the Steelers operate in a SCIF. So, no information from them until they do it.

Does the retirement of Assistant Head coach John Mitchell open up anything? Is there now an opening for an Offensive or Defensive Specialist that will get the title "/ Assistant Head Coach".

As for me I never could figure out where John Mitchell ranked in the Steelers Coaching staff? Above or below the OC and DC?

Was he the "Assistant Head Coach"
    or
Was he an "Assistant to the Head Coach"

Rooney should absolutely demand that Tomlin get Canada some help! He is in way over his head and it’s unconscionable to think that Tomlin is going into 2023 with a status quo mindset on offense. But I fear that the catatonic Rooney will just sit back in all of his smugness and allow it to happen because, you know, continuity and all (plus we’d have to pay him anyway so might as well keep him).

i don't think he's near as bad as some make him out to be.

ben was at the end of his career and we saw for two years he couldn't move and the arm was destined to become a short passing offense. not just under canada either.

next comes mitch whom wasn't exactly a top notch qb in the league anyway but canada was supposed to make him that.

next comes a rookie QB who did improve the youngest offense in the league while having the worst o-line in the league up until that point. lets not forget bens final year with moore as a rookie and kendrick green given to canada as his starting center all year.

7 of 9 games won down the stretch. 2 game winning drives. a run game that improved greatly from what it was to start with. an o-line that improved down that same stretch to become pretty good by that time.

getting rid of your 2nd WR during the year.

the rookie WR gets better as the year moves on.

the rookie QB gets better as the year moves on.

the run game that got better as the year moved on.

the o-line that got better as the year moved on.

a lot of plusses to take into the next season. so, yes i think canada should get some praise for the good as well as blaming him for all the bad.

the defense got better as well. sure we were missing TJ but i didn't hear all this bashing of our DC during the first half of the season, and we did bring a guy in to help him.:cool:

There was an article on OL coach Klemm the other day talking about his strange departure before the season ended to talk a similar job in the college ranks. It seemed he didn't see eye to eye with Matt Canada and since Klemm was the de-facto run game coordinator that caused issues with Canada not only as OC but as the passing game coordinator. So with that friction happening Tomlin made the choice Canada was his guy and Klemm was encouraged to get an early start on his life's work. Klemm spent a single season in the college ranks and will now join the Patriots who he played for at one time.(cue the stealing our secrets crowd) Basically all but saying that even with a push by fans to give Canada the ax, Tomlin wasn't wavering on him, its his guy.

It looks like they made the right choice, Meyer is a better OL coach than Klemm.

I think Lovie Smith would be a great addition as DC or defense play designer/assistant HC

TBH though its hard to argue that "help" would make it better. The offense improved greatly as KFP got going and if that continues, Canada should get credit for that. His playcalling was frustrating at the beginning of the year, but we had an OL that was yet to gel, and the youngest cast of playmakers in the league. We likely would've been fairly bad no matter who was at the helm. I dont mind giving him one more year to see if he can make something of the offense.

I don't necessarily think hiring an "assistant to the OC" or "Pass game coordinator" etc. is better because it basically forces the OC to collaborate with a guy that is seen as his potential replacement. You certainly don't bring in a former OC to do this. It's just a toxic environment that doesn't need to exist. If they hire someone for this position it needs to be a promotion for a young talented mind to work in tandem with the current OC, not a former OC hoping the offense sucks so Canada gets fired or tries to take credit for when the offense succeeds.

We have no choice but to accept it because Canada will be back and it appears at this point no passing game coordinator or offensive assistant will be brought in. If the offense is a success in 2023 and Pickett continues to make strides and we’re in the playoffs and competing then Tomlin would deserve a lot of credit for not listening to the naysayers about Canada. But the opposite is also true. If Mr. Saturday proves once again that he doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing with an NFL offense and Pickett shows no measurable improvement and the offense continues to struggle like it has the last two years under his leadership, then not only does Canada need to be fired but Tomlin’s seat should be red hot because of the asinine decision to bring Canada back in the first place!
