There is a rumor that the Steelers are interested in Marcus Peters. I hope this is just a rumor. Not sure why we would consider an outside free agent CB and an old one at that when the draft is absolutely loaded at CB this year.

The only thing I can think of is they will also draft for the position and the thought is Peters will mento the young CB. I don’t think Peters seems to be the best mento type though.

I hope we sign our key free agents and bring in a ILB and perhaps a slot receiver. The draft should be focused on building the trenches and the defensive backfield.

The why we would be looking at a vet as opposed to a draft pick is easy.

Probably the same reason they looked at Vick and then Haskins and so on. It's an itch Tomlin needs to scratch.

Yes we can’t develop CB’s but when the draft is loaded with them and thin at OT, DT and ILB and you have needs at those positions it doesn’t really make any sense.

No. A veteran is a proven commodity while a draft pick is a hope and prayer.

You are going to pay big money for a vet CB who is top 10.

Correct. MT might learn something about defense and especially the secondary. Finally.

I don't believe this, I remember Tomlin saying that they don't target older players in free agency.

Not saying Tomlin hasn’t said it but I recall Colbert saying that. They did sign Joe Haden.

Well, I would certainly expect us to talk to outside CB FA's due to it being a position of need.... He's a known commodity to us too since we play him 2x a season. I wouldn't put too much stock in how much interest we have until the FA period opens.

Here is Tomlin ... trying to get all of the Db's that he couldn't get in the draft

As much as I want a superstar DB, we did OK with mid-level guys like Wallace and Maulet. We need to lock up Sutton and spend on a solid FA ILB. That’s the glaring hole in our defense

That was Colbert's philosophy, and I am pretty sure there is as new man in the GM office, so all bets are off.

I noticed a change right before last season when they cut Layne, Johnson, and McFarland. 3 guys on their rookie deal probably would have made the roster with Colbert as GM.

I’d really rather retain Sutton and get another outside corner Day 1 of the draft.

If you're going by that SteelersNation tweet about Peters, that blog is run by amateurs who like to post clickbait articles.

Me as well. But the more I think about it and the way the Steelers acted during the senior bowl and this Peters rumor... perhaps they are taking a page out of Phillies h team building hand book. Philly drafted for the trenches and used free agency for the WR and DB’s. It is really hard to gage this draft because we have so many needs.

Yeah but it isn’t that black and white. This is a veteran on the other side of his prime years. He is going to be more expensive than a rookie on an already expensive defense and the potential in the draft is massive at that position. While the potential at the ILB position and OT and DL are all very weak. I would much rather spend our cap money on a free agent ILB where free agency is loaded with inside linebacker talent. We by the way have not shown a strong propensity to develop ILB prospects as of late. I’m not Jerry O is a coach that is getting the most out of that position right now.
