I know the Steelers have traded out of the first round, but have they ever traded back in the 1st round?

Say, trade back to 25 to pick up an extra early 3rd round pick.

Khan's 1st draft, so anything is possible.

They traded back (I believe three spots) when they drafted Big Snack. The only time this century.

    #16: Pittsburgh → New York Jets (D). The Jets acquired this selection from Pittsburgh in exchange for New York's first-round (#19), fourth-round (#111) and sixth-round (#181) picks.[source 3]

I'm not totally in favor of an idea like this because I think we need to find a way to get a 5th round pick, but what about the idea of trading up from 32 to 25ish with the idea of getting a guy we really like with that 5th year option instead of just a 4 year deal?

Are you willing to give up the 3rd round pick to do this? You are not happy about missing the 5th round pick, and now you want to take another pick away to move up?

I love the idea of having the 1st pick on Day 2, because there is always at least one player that has totally gone unnoticed and everyone is shocked about him still being available when round 2 begins. I still believe Joey Porter will be there at #32.

I don't want to do this at all. I just threw it out there as a possibility.

True, but this century is only 23 seasons. They also did it in 1990, when they sent the No. 17 overall pick to the Cowboys for a package that included the No. 21 selection. The Cowboys used that pick to select Emmitt Smith (ouch). The Steelers didn't want Smith because they had just spent a first-round pick on Tim Worley the previous year and still thought he might pan out. They ended up taking Eric Green, a very good player, but not quite the return you want for a Hall of Famer.

I brought this up before....the 5th year deal is basically worthless.
If they are good they want paid early, and usually get it, and if they suck.....You want them gone as soon as You can.

If they want extra picks then they should trade #32, I'm sure they will get a lot of calls on that second day.

Sorry for taking awhile to get back to this topic. I've been dealing with a family emergency back home. In the past few weeks my dad had 3 strokes and throat cancer.

I hear what @S.T.D@S.T.D is saying and it makes sense

Not sure its worthless, the first 5, even 10 picks can get costly, but drafting lower that 5th year option can be used to secure the guy another year and use the 4th year to get some others secured long term. I get what you are saying, but sometimes options can be used to the teams favor.

if they had a couple quality guys they were debating on and could trade back 3 spots and get a 4th and 6th Id do it in a heart beat...especially if a big snack was there lol

    Minka = Yes
    Bud Dupree = No

We were able to keep Bud Dupree on the team for the Extra year without signing him to a large, long term contract. He wasn't the Superstar like Minka, who could demand a new contract, but he was good enough for the Steelers to play that extra 1 season at a slightly inflated price; without having to get in a bidding war with another crazy team.

I think we are in a unique position. Sure, it would be nice to get the 5th and 6th round picks back… but at the end of the day we have 3 picks in the top 50. We haven’t had that much capital in a while. I’d be a bit bummed if we are shopping our picks to get more late round picks. We have an asset that can get us top 10 if we needed to in the Bears pick, or we can use our 2nd or 3rd to get back into the first from 32 if needed. There are a lot of interesting possibilities. It all depends on who we like and where they fall available.

I agree. It's always a gamble, but we also knew with Tjs contract looming they were not going to go huge with Bud. Minka was a no Brainer. They make him the highest paid safety, but the price would just go up lol.

That is the dilemma. If you are in a position where you have 3 or 4 players rated pretty equally in various positions of need, and your scouting has made those picks a virtual coin flip then you at least listen to the offer. At 18 most of the blue chips are going to have been picked, dont get me wrong, still starting level talent, but the elites are usually going in the top 10. I still think BPA is the best way to go, but you negotiate long term. Thise thinking we will get 3 or 4 first year quality starters are not thinking realistically. It can (and has happened), but its rare. The draft is a crap shoot anyway, but you hope to find the future. With the short time period you really desire to get the players contributing late in the first year, then have 3 years to build around them. With limited to no picks in the mid rounds I hope they at least stand pat, but if you can get a 3rd or 4th and perhaps 6th by trading back a few spots then you have to look at it.
