We have two of the highest paid backup QBs

Last year with a rookie there may have been logic to that

    But not next year

A big chunk of that salary has to go one way or another

Art specifically mention Mitch so Mason appears to be odd man out

Mitch won’t be back and they won’t move to analytics for drafting players. Watch how many pro days Tomlin, Khan and Weidl go to. That will tell you if anything has changed.

What could change is how they construct the board, Weidl favors building the trenches. I’d be in favor of that.

Tomlin never controlled the draft. He has input, like any NFL coach does.

There are only two NFL coaches currently in the league that has GM powers from my understanding, that is Belichick and Reid.

Random tidbit during the presser was about playing internationally, and wanting to play outside the country more often. It does make sense to grow the fanbase overseas.

If anyone thinks Tomlin a 16 year coach in the organization is being saddled with a player he doesn’t want I have a bridge to sell you.

And fortunately no one suggested that

    He will be given input

He will not have sole say

What was wrong with the old draft strategy I wonder. I've been reassured for decades that the Steelers were the best in the business.

Truth is, none of us know who does what involving the Steelers draft.(except small fast guys like Dri Archer, that's a Tomlin pick all the way.)

Mitch is under contract for 2023.
It depends on how much he bellyaches about being a starter, which he is not.
Mason is done. Contract expired and he will move on. They will pick a QB potentially, to groom at backup but they do not have to do this in the upcoming draft.

Now Mitch is a young QB, and capable enough to step in but his cap hit is $10.6 million.
Of the Free agent QB's that will be on the market, is there one better?
His contract is very friendly, if they cut him he hits the cap for $2.6mil. and frees up $8mil.

The Steelers are currently over the cap by ~ $3mil. (estimation)
There's going to be some contract reworks also.
Mitch could easily be a cap casualty in that regard. BUT, if Mitch has a cool head, he should settle in as a backup and a little restructuring/extension isn't unconceivable.

The heavy hitters in cap space are of course, Watt and Heyward.
They deserve good contracts, but Heyward will be 34. I absolutley would do most anything to retire him here, but I would think he's going to have to be a lesser hit to the cap.
William Jackson is a heavy hitter to @ $12mil. He didn't play a down.
Jackson could fit into this defense (I hated him in Washington but they were not using him to his strengths) and maybe they extend him and reduce that cap hit.
    If he has any promise.

    Anyway, I am sidetracked....

I like the front office, and I hope they do reshape this draft and focus on the trenches.
Pittsburgh needs a top-quality OT, and they need depth that can push the starters.

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/pittsbu...Contract,average annual salary of $16,400,000.

Maybe they will restructure him to push more into the future. The numbers tell the tale. I feel that he will retire here but I agree they have to lessen the cap hit.

William "Broken Back" Jackson III cost us 3.1 this past season. The look was in the cold tub on IR. To muck of a risk.

    @spotrac

The #Steelers will get a $3.1M look at William Jackson for the remainder of 2022. They then hold a $12.75M "option" for 2023 with which they'll have to decide on by March 17th, when a $2.5M roster bonus is due.

If "Sing along with Mitch" wants to stay he's going to have to agree to a pay cut/restructure.

The Heyward contract is something I would definitely work to suite him, he's a centerpiece and probably has 2 to 3 years left...
Jackson's deal is up at the end of the season. He 'could' fit in this defense, his strengths are along the lines how they play here. Washington insisted in this soft coverage zone thing... he's a man up kind of guy.
I probably view him as an easy 'sink or swim' guy here. You'll know early on if he's a fit and there is no 'he'll get better with time' deal.
The back - That was a crutch Washington used to bench him. Yes, he was dinged, and I think Pittsburgh did the right thing to not rush him in, though I would have liked to see right away as to if he fits here, now I have to wait till camp.
He did look good at some practices, but I can't say one way or the other.

The decision tree is along the lines as my post waxed poetically. Those are the high spots in the carpet.
How/if they address them, is another thing.
If they want to live with those, fine. Just be sure to grab some talent in the trenches so out skills positions can operate.

Actually last spring I posted a good article where Art explained the draft

Short version is the GM runs the show

All scouts coaches coordinators and head coach provide input

    Players are ranked

Naturally if there is a player who is unfavorable or unwanted they are not on the list

They then in general take their highest ranked player

If two or more available are ranked similarly then they go by need

The owner is the owner he can do anything if he wants to

This is right on. He will NOT be given a player he does not want. Does that mean he has the final say? I don't know. Seems like it to me. But you are exactly right. 16 years brings some perks with that tenure and one huge one is who we draft.

No one suggested he has sole say either. No one has ever implied Tomlin sits in a room by himself constructing the draft.
