Realistically, I think Jackson, Witherspoon and Mitch will be gawn by March. That alone opens up nearly 25/26m in cap space, and who knows how much higher the cap will be compared to the guestimates being tossed around now.

With that said, we probably have to get a vet QB and draft one in the 4th or perhaps 5th round, meaning we'd have to trade into the 5th round, somehow.

Just listened to the game recap podcast on Steelers Depot. About 70 minutes in they break down the cap situation. Love him or hate him Dave Bryan knows his stuff when it comes to the salary cap.

Bush is gone I'm sure, but they can't get rid of Myles too. He's not great but he's steady. They can't replace both in one off season.

Going to have to wait a bit to have any kind of educated opinion on who to draft.

Being an Iowa fan, I have had the pleasure of watching Campbell's career. He is definitely a tackling machine and has the proverbial "nose for the ball", plus size and athleticism.
However, if you're looking for that guy who is going to turn and run with an RB or these Uber athletic tight ends, I'm not sure he is the guy. He is an intelligent player who knows where to be so when you watch his highlights in coverage, he is basically dropping to a spot, covering an area and making plays instinctively. I just don't know how well he does in one on one coverage.

OK, so what are the odds that the Steelers stay put at 17,32, and 48? And don't try to trade up or down. I am going to need to watch who they are visiting to see what top 10 picks they may be interested in going after.

I can remember the Steelers trading up in the 1st round, but I don't ever remember them trading down in the 1st round.

They traded out of the 1st altogether one year and ended up with three 2nds. They got Keenan Lewis, some junk guard who was a bust, and I can’t remember the third guy

Not quite - they traded out of the second to get 3 third rounders. Lewis, Kraig Urbik and Mike Wallace. We picked Ziggy Hood in the first.

I still have trouble typing that last sentence…

Will Mason ever accept he will only be a backup qb? Will he want to stay as #2 here? Will another team offer him a chance at #1?

idk if he’ll get that offer. I’d keep him to backup for another 5 per year but I’m sure he’s red assed over the situation so I doubt he stays around.

    Agree with the top

A big part of the bottom is not having a 30-40MM quarterback

I think it all comes down to if he believes he will get a fair shot at being #2 since the dream of starting isn't going to happen. I can't see him re-signing to be inactive every Sunday or not even being considered when Mitch stunk up the place when Kenny was concussed.

And thank you yes! That’s the trade down I remember. Three thirds. Can’t believe I didn’t remember Mike Wallace

I would think he’d have to know by now that he’s not gonna be a starter in this league wouldn’t he?

If I am seeing this correctly, via Spotrac, we have 4.35 million in cap space headed into next year. Now that is not entirely true since there will be roster moves that will open up money

    - Right now William Jackson III is on the books for 12.7 million. We will cut him before we pay him that next year. I would assume he would take some sort of deal that allows him to stay and play for a considerable amount less. This frees up at least 8 million in my estimation.
    - I'm straight up cutting Trubisky. Good for both sides. Saves us 8 million
    - Gunnar Olszewski is cut too. Yay 2 million
    - Ahkello Witherspoon likely gets cut. He wasn't healthy and was out performed by Wallace. Wallace stays, Witherspoon frees up 4 million.
    - Miles Killebrew can find us another 2 million by getting the scissors.
    - Other minor moves can free up a small chunk, but the things above likely net us 24 million in savings... bringing us to 28.35 million

Now we have to consider that guys like Boswell, DJ, Watt, Minkah, Heyward, Daniels, Chuks, etc. can all have their contracts restructured.
    - DJ, Watt, and Mink alone have the potential to net us around 28 million dollars (according to a SteelerDepot article I read)
    - This effectively brings us to 56 million in space, but we could push harder if needed.

    Signing internal players
    - Cam Sutton - I think he gets 8 a year, but I would be cool with 9 or more depending. Lets call it 9 million for now.
    - Larry Ogunjobi - A guy that could be had for around 6-7 a year. Lets call it 6 for now.
    - Terrell Edmunds - I see him taking a team friendly deal to stick around. 4 million a year.
    - Robert Spillane - LB3 get you what, 3 million per year? I'd say something around that.
    - Damonte Kazee - Not much interest for him outside of Pitt last year and he was hurt, so he didn't garner much additional attention. 2 million per.
    - Hassenauer, Gentry, Pierre all retained as RFA.
    * This brings us to 24 before RFA, something like 27-28 after? Leaving us with 28 million in outside money.

Outside Players - We are likely to keep around 7-10 million for draft picks plus extra... we have 18-20 million to play with.
    - I think we end up making a fairly large splash at either CB or ILB. Edmunds or Bradberry/Peters. They likely eat up a considerable portion of this. (11-12ish million, leaving 6-8 million left)
    - Next leaves us back up QB, potential back ups at WR, DL, or OLB.
    - I like Brissett/Darnold at QB, Landry or JuJu at WR, idk at DL or OLB. Extra restructures might need to happen depending on who they target and the price they pay, etc.

    Draft
    - Despite what most believe the real biggest holes on this team are ILB and CB. We will fill one in FA and likely take the other with our first pick in the draft.
    - OL is next, and I would expect us to go here with one of our picks in the second round
    - DL is a possibility as is OLB as well. Dark horse would be WR or S but those are likely addressed later in the draft.

    * 17, 32, 49, 80 - that is a good start. We walk away with either a ILB or CB, an OL, and two from DL/OLB/WR/S. If we somehow dont plan on addressing either CB or ILB in FA, then we get a CB and an ILB, an OL, and one from DL/OLB/WR/S.
    * we have a 4th and two 7ths after that, so the 4th rounder gets one from the DL/OLB/WR/S group that we didn't take, and we take some 7th round fliers on any position that has a decent players left
    * QB, RB, TE, C likely not drafted

I would place Dobbs final two weeks duty along the same situation as Duck. Not comparing the two or their play just that any good option was unavailable at the time. Dobbs wasn't starting because he was their first pick. Trade deadline had passed, injuries around the league at the position drained the talent pool and Dobbs could be plucked from the practice squad with no worries. Heck I just saw the Dolphins signed Glennon just in case their 3rd string QB being thrust into a starting role turns to a giant pit of suck.

You talking restructures on DJ, TJ, and Fitz? Also please tell me you are joking about Darnold? He is so destroyed it would be like signing Rosen.

Yeah, why not? Isn't the whole cap thing what Khan is good at? And as a back up, he would be fine for the price tag. He's not a good starter, but is he any worse than Trubisky in an emergency situation? There are very few quality back ups in the league and the ones that are tend to be way too pricey for what we could afford. Rosen has been out of the league for the whole year. Darnold went 4-2 as a starter with 7TD's and 3INT's. Never said he was all that good, but for a couple million a year having him sit behind KFP wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. There isn't much better in the 4-5 million range.

It was unclear at least to me that you were talking restructures and not advocating moving them. There will be some more capable backups out there so that we won't have to sit here splitting hairs about how much less Darnold sucks than Mitch. Didn't Darnolds problems this year lead to Baker Mayfield and then a coaching change and then Baker being shuffled off to the Rams and Darnold still didn't get back on there? I like your first choice better Brisset has shown more upside and can win games.

Ah, I see. Yeah, just restructuring their contracts. There are a few other candidates that could help out too (Chuks, Daniels, Heyward, Cole... but obviously less than DJ/Watt/Minkah.

If you check the list of QB's set to be FA's... its bad. Brissett is better than Darnold, but he will also be more expensive. Bridgewater and Keenum are probably too expensive. Heinicke is definitely too expensive. Do we like Flacco or Dalton better? nah. Mike White? who knows. Drew Lock? Tyler Huntley? Nathan Peterman? Gardiner Minshew? Its rough out here in bargain land.

Josh Dobbs on playing with Ben and being a starter.

Also. Steelers need 4 arms to go to camp, I wouldn't be surprised if he is one of them next year.
